  3. Indicators should cover the entire food chain Convergence of evidence not a necessary condition Conduct multidisciplinary field assessments Adopt a minimum data set (costs, sustainability) EARLY WARNING INDICATORS

  4. MINIMUM DATA SET • Meteorological data (rainfall, soil moisture) • Remote sensing imageries (NDVI, RFE) • Food Balance Sheet (forecast import, export) • Wholesale prices (food crops, livestock) • Child anthropometry (age, weight, height)

  5. International early warning systems • USAID-FEWS • WFP-VAM • FAO-GIEWS • FAO/WFP Crop assessment missions

  6. RESEARCH • Exploit the new information technologies (Satellite/mobile phones, internet, FM radio) • Define/refine early warning indicators • Using local institutions (school, clinic, church) • Refugees/IDPs as source of information • Conflict early warning (CEWARN)
