Research • What do I want to do? • Where do I want to do it? • What companies do it? • Who do I know in or near those companies? • What will I contribute to the bottom line? • Your career goals don’t matter • The employer wants to limit headcount • The employer only cares about you providing more economic value than the cost you create

  4. Research (Cont’d) • Know your competition • What background is required for this position? • What is the profile of people currently in this position? • What can I do to prove I have those attributes and stand out as well? • How much am I worth and how much do I want?

  5. Preparation • Resumes – multiple & tailored • Functional Research (get up to date) • Contact approaches • Interviewing skills

  6. Contacts • Personal • Advice • Resume assistance • Referrals • Networking • Social Media

  7. Approaches • Ads • Track the ads in the paper • Company Web Sites • Tailor the resume to match the ads – key words • Networking – • Exploit the contacts • Elevator Speech • Cold Calls • Industry Research • Internet • News

  8. Execution • Keep records • Who, what, when, results • Review steps • Update research • Update resumes based on response • Use available Mentors

  9. Execution (cont’d) • Practice • Discussing your capabilities. Know your strengths • Phone calls • Interviewing • Overcome limiting behaviors such as speaking too fast, use of slang, not listening or confirming meaning of questions, lack of eye contact, etc.

Additional Thoughts • Get feedback • From your Network, Mentors, Interviewers, • When rejected as an applicant or get negative feedback – toughen up and adjust • Never give up • It’s a numbers game • Add interviewers to your network – ask for their help and feedback • There will be plenty of rejection – being able to handle it is a primary requirement in today’s job market • Don’t take it personally • Persevere and follow up – even when you know you will not get the position
