BELLWORK • Describe the beliefs and leaders that are associated with each type of WWII Government: • Fascism • Nazism • Communism • If these governments were so radical and damaging to individual rights, why did people support the dictators? • THINKER: Think back to last semester – how was society in India organized?

Mussolini • Act of Aggression: Recreate the Holy Roman Empire. • Wanted to restore Italy’s power, influence, and pride by force! • People supported Mussolini because he brought order to the nation, solved unemployment and rekindled feelings of patriotism and nationalism. • It was the Italians destiny to recapture the greatness and glory of ancient Rome!

  3. Stalin • Act of Aggression: Great Purges • Persecution, imprisonment, and execution ofgovernment officials. • As a class, we are going to read more specifically about the Great Purges. • Be ready to answer the following questions on a ½ sheet of paper. • Be ready to participate!

  4. The Stalin Purges and “Show Trials” • How did Stalin attempt to improve the economy? What was the result of this? • Who was Sergei Kirov? What happened to him? • What was Stalin’s reasoning for killing government officials? (Why did he do this?) • How did Stalin “simplify” the judicial system? • What types of people did Stalin “purge?” • How did Stalin get people to confess? • What were the “show trials?” • In the end, how many people died during Stalin’s Great Purges?

India’s Struggle for Independence • India was controlled by Great Britain until 1947. • Great Britain gave Indians very few rights, forced them to pay high taxes, and punished them in society. • Gandhi worked with the Indians to fight for independence using methods of peace. • These peaceful ideas influenced others, like Martin Luther King Jr., to confront injustice with nonviolent methods. • To learn more about India’s struggle for Independence and Gandhi, we are going to read the article: “freedom and partition.” • Be ready to participate and take notes!

India’s Independence: 6 Panel Cartoon • Create a six panel cartoon illustrating the stages of India’s struggle for independence • Each panel will represent a different stage of the conflict. • It must be historically accurate, neat, and creative. • Every panel must include • Colored picture • One sentence of description
