Who is the Toronto School Board? • It is a body that operates the province’s publicly funded schools. • Develop and maintain policies and organizational structures • Monitor and evaluate the performance of Director of Education • Setting the Board’s budget • Ensures that appropriate staff are hired for schools • Ontario Education Act • Many more responsibilities….

What does the School Trustee Do? • Trustee is a member of the Toronto School Board. • Responsible for establishing policy direction. • Accountable to the province. • Accountable to their electorate. • Community leaders • Respond to the concerns of parents and others • Many other responsibilities…

  5. What does Deborah stand for? • Accountability- Zero misuse of Taxpayers dollars • Advocacy- respect community values in school system • Awareness- increase awareness of school system for parents • Active Education- increase hands-on education and trade experience in school curriculum

  6. Deborah’s background • Education: B.A., BSW, RSW, German Diploma and numerous certificates in many areas • Professional experience: Residential counsellor, Program Coordinator, Supervisor, Director of Health and Senior Services, Executive Director EAHI • Personal: Mother, fluent in 3 languages, educated in different countries, lived in Malvern, attended High school in Malvern, Daughter attends school in Malvern, attends the church at Malvern and loves the Lord.

All volunteer positions Priority positions • Canvassing- door to door • Canvassing- phone canvassing • Canvassing- events • Canvassing- dropping off flyers at Stores, businesses, organizations etc. • Canvassing – handing out flyers at plazas, bus stops (peak hours), • Recruiting volunteers • Volunteer Management • Prayer Warriors Secondary Positions • Media • Networking • Marketing • IT • Office Assistance • Get financial support from other known party towards campaign • Fundraising coordinator

  9. What can you expect while canvassingone on one? Difficult experience • Challenging due to individual’s personality, knowledge and behaviour • Doors being shut • Intimidation • Language, and cultural barriers. Good experience • Curiosity • Open and friendly • A chance to explain the TDSB • A chance to get support for Deborah • A chance to recruit the individual to volunteer for Deborah • Gaining individual experience to communicate, market and influence others. • Canvassing always together with one other person. You are not alone!
