  2. Outline • Administrivia • Questions/Comments??? • Chat activity • Introduction to Netscape Composer • Activity create a web page on your SFU web space • Lab time: • Work on WebQuests • Individual consultations regarding the position paper • For the next 2 weeks

Administrivia: Weekly Feedback • Most significant: • Learning about educational issues through joining a listserv • WebQuests (fun, creative and stimulate critical thinking) • Reading responses aren’t a 5-day commitment • Linking learning objectives to instructional design • Do differently/suggestions: • Time to converse in the chat room together about how to improve our ways of educating a new generation • Work in pairs on the WebQuests? (i.e. constructivist way of learning) • Last class was an overload with new and important information about WebQuests, Instructional Design and Assignment 4

Administrivia: Weekly Feedback • Other comments: • Learning a lot about ways to use computers in the classroom/learned a lot in just 4-5 weeks • Enjoying the course, but overwhelmed by simultaneous assignments/projects • Question: Does the class have any suggestions? • Appreciate that what’s being learned is reflected in the course • Support is helping to alleviate anxiety

  6. Chat Activity • Divide into groups: • K-elementary and middle-high school • Login to WebCT (http://webct.sfu.ca) • Go to “Synchronous Chat” and the appropriate chat room • K-elementary  By the pond • Middle-high school  Higher ground

  7. Chat Activity: Scenario • Students are “different” from when we were in the K-12 system. For example, computers and TV have a significant influence on children. • What might you do to improve your way of educating this “new” generation using technology? What’s the issue? • As a group, come up with 3 ideas to improve teaching for your grade-level (K-elementary or middle-high school).

  8. Chat Activity: Wrap-up • What were the ideas formulated by your groups? • What was your experience like in a chat room? • i.e. Pro’s/Con’s compared to asynchronous conferencing and the f2f classroom

For the Next 2 Weeks • October 9 • Optional Class: Help on the WebQuest assignment will be available • Suggestion: Make the most out of your time • Start the online discussion for Reading Response #3 • Complete the mid-semester feedback form • Post any questions in the WebCT Q&A • Check WebCT for announcements
