  1. AIR PRESSURE Air is amixture of gases and its molecules are in continuous motion. When kept in a container, the molecules collide with each other.

  2. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Define atmospheric pressure Explain the factors affecting Air pressure

  3. MEDIUM TEXT FORCE EXERTED BY AIR PER UNIT AREA IS CALLED AIR PRESSURE

  4. Earth is surrounded by a thick layer of air called atmosphere, which extend upto 300km above the surface. The weight of the air exerting pressure is called atmospheric pressure.Barometer is used to measure atmospheric pressure

  6. Take atin can and fill it half with water, close the lid tightly. Hold the can under running water. We will observe that the can gets crushed.Inside the can the steam exerts apressure on the walls and it is balanced by the atmospheric pressure. When tap water is poured it cools down and condenses. The pressure inside get reduced. As aresult the atmospheric pressure crushes the can.

  7. Factors affecting Air Pressure 1 Altitude. Air pressure decreases as we move upwards from the surface of the earth, because air becomes thinner.

  8. 2 Temperature. When the temperature increases air expands and air pressure decreases. When the temperature decreases air contracts and air pressure increases

  9. 3. Water vapour When Humidity is HIGH, Air pressure is less. Water vapour is less denser than dry air and exerts less pressure
