  1. Preliminary Population to Provider Ratio Analyses

  2. Objectives • Demonstrate the impact of adding non-physician providers • Assess the impact of age-gender adjustment on population • Show the preliminary numerical and geographic distribution of Population-to-Provider ratios

  3. Methods • Committee decisions reflected in counting of provider FTE to the degree possible with current data • Additional refinements may be applied • Geographic FTE only, population specific FTE not assessed at this point • Population based on 2010 actual census counts by aggregating block level data • Analyses at the PCSA level based on zip code data for providers • Geocoding will permit counts at other levels

  4. Adjusted Base counts: • MDs: 217,541 • PAs: 19,652 • NPs: 35,734 • CNMs: 2,534 • TOTAL: 275,463 • NOTE: Not true FTE – not corrected for hours worked

  5. Population-to-provider ratio by % MD FTE (All physicians) (Half physicians) (Good ratio) (Bad ratio)

  6. Population-to-provider ratio by population size (High pop count) (Small pop count) (Good ratio) (Bad ratio)

  7. Percent MD FTE by Population size (High pop count) (Small pop count) (Large % MDs) (Small % MDs)

  8. Impact of Age/Sex Adjustment

  9. Descriptives of P-to-P Ratios For PCSAs • PCSAs • N=6,333 PCSAs with providers, 209 no provider • MD only Raw: • Median: 1800:1, 75th Percentile: >3334:1 • All Provider Types Raw: • Median: 1500:1, 75th Percentile: >2272:1 • Current Geographic HPSAs (approximated) • MD only Raw: • Median: 3796:1 • All Provider Types Raw: • Median: 2223:1
