What is Public Speaking? • Defined as: “1 : The act or process of making speeches in public 2 : The art of effective oral communication with an audience” (Merriam-Webster Online, 2008) • Similar to and distinct from conversational speaking.
What is Your Biggest Fear? • #5- Heights • #4- Darkness • #3- Spiders • #2- Death • #1- Public Speaking (SUPRISE!)
Nervousness is OK! • EVERYBODY gets nervous while speaking. • 76% of experienced speakers have nervousness before speaking. (24% are liars) • Nervousness is good! • You will live.
Dealing with Nervousness • Experience! • Prepare and practice. • Think positively! • Visualize success. • You are more nervous than you seem. • You won’t be perfect- that is OK!
Close your eyes and BREATHE! Eye contact with specific people. Nail the intro. Focus on the content, not the audience. Humor = great equalizer. You are better than everyone. Visual aids divert attention. Picture audience in their underwear. Specific Tips for Combating Nervousness
