The Rights-Respecting School Award An introduction to Sydenham School July 2014
In a ‘Rights-Respecting School’ the values and language of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child are central to the ethos
Improvements in children’s well-being There is growing evidence that becoming a RRS contributes to: • Improved pupil self-esteem • Pupils’ enhanced moral development • Improved behaviour and relationships • More positive attitudes towards diversity in society and the reduction of prejudice • Pupils’ development as global citizens • Enhanced job satisfaction for teachers • Overall school improvement including better attendance, learning and academic standards
Rights respecting is about being explicit and recognising our responsibility as ‘Duty Bearers’ • Embedding articles in all our policies, SOW, displays, posters in everything we do.
Make decisions on how to move forward in September. • First Step: Recognition of Commitment which will take 3-6 months • To achieve this: • Steering Group • Assemblies • Notice board/website • Displays in all areas • Charter in each classroom • Develop portfolio of evidence • School Improvement Plan
Your daughters will be involved in a number of ways: • Steering group • Focus group • Being rewarded for showing values of Rights Respecting School • Getting involved in creating a tutor group charter etc
