  4. Becoming Official It is important that you take care of university requirements so that you have access to resources and important information/notifications.

  5. Student ID • ID Services has developed a plan for online students who never come to campus to receive their ETSU ID. • Contact ID Services • Email: IDBUCS@etsu.edu • (Include your name and E#) • Phone: 423-439-8316

  6. Immunizations • The state of Tennessee requires that all students enrolled in state colleges and universities meet certain immunization requirements prior to their initial enrollment in the university or college. Therefore, if you have a hold stating that you cannot register under fulltime status due to immunizations, you must meet those requirements before you can register fulltime. For more information go to http://www.etsu.edu/nursing/shserv/immunizations/requirements.aspx. • Students who are taking exclusive online and distance-learning courses are given exemptions. For more information go to http://www.etsu.edu/nursing/shserv/immunizations/exemptions.aspx.

  7. GoldLink • Logging into GoldLink requires your ETSU username and password. This is the same username and password that you use to login to ETSU email and D2L. If you have not activated your account, you may do so by going to https://etsupws.etsu.edu/AccountActivation/AccountActivation.aspx • The GoldLink portal allows you to: • Access your Goldmail account • Access your D2L account • Sign up for classes • Accept Financial Aid Awards • Have access to various other resources • To view video tutorials about GoldLink, please go to http://www.etsu.edu/academicaffairs/elearning/ats/portal/video.aspx

Regents Online Degree Program (RODP) Accounts • If your degree program is through Regents Online Degree Program (RODP), it is important that you check out their FAQ page for information about setting up a D2L account (this is separate from the ETSU D2L), how to email your professors, where to purchase books, etc. • http://www.rodp.org/current-students/current-students-faq • Please remember that you will still need to check your ETSU Goldmail account regularly. ETSU will only contact students through their ETSU Goldmail account.

  9. Getting Connected To make sure you gain all the information you need during your pursuit of an online degree program/certificate, you will want to be connected so not to miss out on important information, professional social interaction, deadline dates, and completion requirements.

  10. YOUR Program Specialist By this time, you should already know your School of Graduate Studies, Program Specialist. This is the person who processed your application and who will work with you through graduation. This is a very important person, and you will want to maintain contact with her/him often. If you do not remember who your Program Specialist is, please go to the below link and look for your degree program. In the Specialist column, the program specialist’s last name will be listed, which is linked to her/his email. http://www.etsu.edu/gradstud/Coordinators.aspx.

  11. YOUR Program Coordinator Graduate Program Coordinators are faculty who are instrumental in providing you with information pertinent to your degree program. By now you have probably made contact with the coordinator of the degree for which you are pursing. If you have not done that or if you have forgotten who your program coordinator is, please go to http://www.etsu.edu/gradstud/Coordinators.aspx.

Graduate & Professional Student Association (GPSA) • GPSA is a student-managed organization whose membership is open to all currently enrolled post-baccalaureate degree-seeking students. • Joining GPSA will allow you to: • become involved in institutional governance and development • participate in student-sponsored activities • apply for travel awards - http://www.etsu.edu/gradstud/gpsa/travelfunds.aspx. • serve as a student member representative for your program • document your participation on your resume • Go to http://www.etsu.edu/gradstud/gpsa/default.aspx for more information.

  14. Understanding Graduate School Policy Graduate students must maintain a 3.0 grade point average to remain in good academic standing. Students who fall below 3.0 are subject to probation and/or dismissal. Please see policies in the graduate catalog at http://catalog.etsu.edu/.

  16. Grants and Awards • Outstanding Thesis, Dissertation, and Capstone Awards • Five types of awards are given out each year.   17. Grants and Awards (Cont.) • Student Research Grants • Graduate students conducting thesis or dissertation research as part of their graduate program are eligible to apply. For grant description and requirements, go to http://www.etsu.edu/gradstud/ResearchGrants.aspx • Excellence in Teaching Award • Students must be currently enrolled graduate teaching assistants or teaching associates OR have taught once during the past three semesters to be eligible. • For award description and requirements, go to http://www.etsu.edu/gradstud/ExcellenceInTeachingAwards.aspx.

ETD (Electronic Theses and Dissertations) Workshops • The School of Graduate Studies offers a workshop on Thesis/Dissertation Preparation and a workshop on Electronic Thesis/Dissertation Submission during the Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters. • The workshops are offered on ground with the option to view via live streaming. Rebecca Loyd will be sending out emails about these workshops so check your ETSU Goldmail account often. • If you are in a program that requires a thesis or dissertation, you are highly encouraged to attend the Thesis/Dissertation Preparation workshop during your first semester at ETSU. • Dates will be posted on our Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/#!/etsusgs) • and on our School of Graduate Studies website • (http://www.etsu.edu/gradstud/etd/).

Library • Sherrod Library has a full-time Distance Education Librarian dedicated to helping Distance Education students with their research and ensuring students have the tools they need to succeed. Distance Education students have access to the same library services and collections as all on-campus students. Services include: • Help with formatting research topics and resources to help with literature review • Citations information • Refworks • A Web-based research management, writing and collaboration tool designed to help researchers easily gather, manage, store, and share all types of information, as well as generate citations and bibliographies.

Library (Cont.) • TALC Card • The Tennessee Academic Library Collaborative (TALC) was created to foster collaborative activities among the libraries of Tennessee's public institutions of higher education. Students are able to borrow books from other Tennessee academic libraries, using the TALC Card.  • Help with setting up personal accounts in various databases • Appointments via telephone, email, chat, or meeting software • Interlibrary Loan • Students may request Books, book chapters, journal articles, items on microform, and theses/dissertations. In addition, graduate students may request video and audio recordings.

  24. Center for Academic Achievement • While tutoring is only offered for undergraduate students, these folks will review research papers and PowerPoint presentations for graduate students (whether on ground or online). • For more information go to http://cfaalearning.etsu.edu/writing-help/.

Degree Works • Degree Works is a Web-based tool for students to monitor their academic progress toward degree completion. • Fully integrated with GoldLink, Degree Works gives students an up-to-date, play-by-play of courses taken and courses needed to help them plan and complete their degree(s) on time! • You can log into Degree Works through your GoldLink Portal. • For more information go to: http://www.etsu.edu/reg/degreeworks/default.aspx

  26. Turnitin • Turnitin is a web based originality checking service. It searches more than 4.5 billion publicly accessible Internet sites, millions of documents from ProQuest databases, the Gutenberg collection of literary classics, and several million student papers submitted to Turnitin since 1996. • Your professors may require that you submit essay/research assignments through Turnitin, which is integrated through D2L (Desire2Learn). If not, graduate students are still encouraged to set up a Turnitin account separate from D2L and use this program to help develop/augment their writing and citation skills and to ensure academic integrity. • To set up an independent Turnitin account, please contact your Thesis/Dissertation chairperson.

  27. Graduate Student Success Specialist • The Graduate Student Success Specialist offers services to assist graduate students with: • Setting realistic personal and academic goals • Overcoming obstacles in day-to-day life • Resolving problems and providing support • Finding support services on campus and in the community • The Graduate Student Success Specialist provides graduate students with a monthly electronic newsletter sent to students’ goldmail accounts.
