Analysis of thriller opening sequence
E N D
What is the film about? hOw do we know? - Child hood trauma - possible abuse - from the brusises on his face at the birthday party - Maybe Committed a crime - prison, questioning room, pshycward from the psychiatrist saying ‘this isn’t going to work if you don’t talk to me’ suggesting she wants to help him - Sound effect of buzz of a security door - Someone killed his mum - possibly him or an abusive partner - Man is in a state of oblivion - always has bland facial expressions and no emotion in his face - Thriller from the bold font ‘solitude’ is shown in at the end and the sirens played suggesting something bad has happened
How does the opening sequence make people want to watch more of the film? - Music - Zoom out to reveal more of his face - Man staring into camera - The black screen - Low intensity lighting - Facial expression is very simple - Body language - ‘Tell me about your mum’ - triggers flashback which makes you want to know more about what happened to him and his mum
Who are the Characters? What are we meant to feel about them? - Man - Feel empathy for him - Child /younger version - birthday party, seems sad, depressed in a situation where he should be happy - Physiologist / questioner - quite cold - Mum - gets killed by someone either an abusive partner or maybe the son
What do you think the Rest of plot line would be? - Details of what happening - Events that made him end up in a psych ward - Childhood - His future - if he gets better, heals from his trauma and gets out of the psych ward
- Flashback - intrigues you and makes you want to watch more and know more about what happened - Editing overlapping of clips in the flashback - Lack of colour in phsyc ward scenes compared to childhood scenes Aspect which were good
aspect which were bad - Confusing in the flashback as to what’s going on - What happened to the mum - did he do it or not
