  9. 2. VCTA website: • The Victorian Commercial Teachers Association (VCTA) is an independent organisation providing leadership, support services, programs and resources to educators. VCTA's Australia-wide membership is drawn from people working in schools, groups/organisations associated with schools, tertiary institutions and teachers in training. • Please ensure we have your name to ‘opt-in’ to free VCTA Membership for 2013. We will pass your name and email address to the VCTA to initiate the process to obtain your membership. Put this on your ‘must do now’ list!

  10. Getting to know you: Please complete a student profile sheet • Your name • Your background (previous study undertaken and any work experience you have) • Your teaching methods /specialisms • Why you want to teach

  11. Our first task: Think about the teachers who made a difference to your education and/or life. What characteristics made them particularly good or otherwise?

  12. Workshop organisation: • We will ‘work’ in groups that will be formed in a variety of ways. Today we will use the 1, 2, 3, 4 method to form our groups. • Work in pairs. Take turns to list five characteristics of teachers you thought were effective. (or opposite for ‘negative’ examples) • Pairs combine to form one group. What characteristics did you all agree on? List these in order. • Each group shares their findings with the larger workshop.

  13. Understanding the VCE: Be sure you understand the following terms: • Number of units/entry requirements • Study designs • Accredited time period • Areas of Study • Outcomes • Key knowledge & skills • Role of ICT • Satisfactory completion (Units 1-4) • Levels of achievement (Units 3-4)

  14. The Accounting Study Design Activity 1: • Working in pairs do a quick concept map of the major topics in unit 1. Work from the Study Design provided. Think about how they connect or link. • As a group design a timeline for teaching unit 1. Draw a rough outline on the paper provided. Remember to allow time for assessment – both informal and formal. Assume 16 weeks teaching time. • Compare your timeline with the one from the VCTA website timeline provided..

  15. Activity 2 Select one discrete topic from your course outline. • Identify the number of lessons available to teach this topic. • Identify the skills/knowledge students need to develop. • Discuss how many exercises/tasks will students need to complete in order to master these skills. How long will they take to complete these? • Revisit your timeline. Have you allowed sufficient time for students to develop understanding?

  16. Specific accounting issues: • ICT - teaching time? • ICT in SAC assessment? • Teacher advice section and use of templates

  17. Activity 3 Look at the article(s) allocated to your group. Decide: • What area of study/unit would it ‘suit’? • What important concepts does it illustrate/explain • What specific learning outcomes could it address. • The benefit of using media material like this article in your teaching.

  18. Pedagogy Students learn: 10% of what they read 20% of what they hear 30% of what they see 50% of what they both see and hear 70% of what is discussed with others 80% of what they experience personally 95% of what they teach to others

  19. Any questions?

  20. Check your knowledge so far….. Do you know … • Where to find the study design for VCE Accounting? • Where you can obtain timelines/course outlines for units 1- 4? • What textbook options are available? • Where to find additional resources? OR look at the capacity matrix.

  21. Homework: • If you haven’t already done so, engage with Topic 1 from Moodle. Read the topic 1 outline, check out the resources and do the VCE Quiz. • Come to next week’s workshop with a strong understanding of the AusVELS curriculum and the Economics and Business Shape paper. • Develop an effective index system and start saving useful resources.
