  1. DSS Editing Module 1 ArcGIS Overview

  2. ArcMap Toolbars • The main application viewer is where users can: • Edit layers • Display, query, and investigate spatial layers • Create maps • Run spatial analysis • Check for and correct topology errors Table of contents Main map display

  3. ArcCatalog Main function of this application is for data design and management of geospatial layers. Think of it as the “Windows Explorer” for GIS layers • Managing geospatial data – preview data, copy, delete, move, search, create new files, create and manage attribute fields within features, import/export features • Compact geodatabases • Search for geospatial data Catalog Tree

  4. ArcScene • ArcScene is the 3D visualization and analysis application of ArcGIS that allows users to view data in 3D perspective • Used for smaller datasets (a defined study area) • Can use analysis functions and tools within it • Can navigate and interact with 3D features and raster datasets • Can create and display surfaces • Supports 3D symbols • Can overlay and view other vector and/or raster layers • Uses the projection from first loaded dataset • Can add directional info • Create a stereo image • Can exaggerate elevation heights • Can zoom in/out • Create a flight path • Can change orient pitch/roll of view

  5. ArcGlobe ArcGlobe is the 3D visualization application of ArcGIS for large datasets. It has very good performance at navigation and rendering high- and low-resolution raster and vector data. ArcSceneis a better choice for analysis. • Is part of 3D Analyst extension • Creates a seamless visualization of both raster and feature data • All data is projected into a single projection – Cube Projection • Perfect for viewing information at a global or covering a large scale • As you zoom in and move around, imagery becomes clearer and 3D elevation changes becomes noticeable Golden Gate Bridge

  6. ArcScene/ArcGlobe Comparison ArcGIS 10.1 Desktop Help – Working with ArcGlobe and ArcScene

  7. Checking out an ArcGIS license for mobile use Availability - lists the Number of available licenses for checkout Borrow/Return - allows users to pick the licenses needed for mobile/disconnected network use of ArcGIS Toggle Borrow/Return status by selecting under Borrowed column. Click Apply or OK to complete transaction.

  8. Resources ArcGIS has Desktop Help under Help menu within each application. Can use Search, Contents or Favorites tab to look for and view topics and information within Desktop Help
