  1. Every Monday you will receive 10 vocabulary words that you will be tested on, the following Monday (or Tuesday if there is no school Monday ) You will copy the 10 words, their definitions, part of speech, and synonyms and antonyms by the end of the class period every Monday *If you receive a 90% on the test from the previous week you may opt out We will go over the words as a class, via power point, the day they are assigned and the Friday before the test or before you take the test. You will receive 10 points extra credit for making flash cards- due at the time of the test. If you are caught cheating; you will receive a zero, your parents will be notified, and you will be written up. review of vocabulary procedure

  3. Review!What is a good trick for using a definition to find out if a word is a verb?

  4. 1. Abate: (v) to make less in amount, degree, etc; to subside, become less; to nullify; to deduct, omit Synonyms: diminish, decrease, subside, let up Antonyms: intensify, increase, magnify, wax *what do the prefixes “sub,” “de,” and “in” mean?

  5. 2. Adulation: (n) praise or flattery that is excessive Synonyms: adoration, idolize, hero-worship *look at the roots! Antonyms: ridicule, derision, scorn, odium *what types of settings/situations might adulation be used for?

  6. 3. Anathema: (eh nath eh meh) (n) an object of intense dislike; a curse or strong denunciation Synonyms: malediction, imprecation, abomination Antonyms: benediction *give me an example of each!

  7. 4. Astute: (adj) shrewd, crafty, showing practical wisdom Synonyms: shrewd, acute, sagacious, judicious, wily Antonyms: obtuse, doltish, empty-headed, dumb *how do the antonyms help you understand the word better?

  8. 5. Avarice: (n) a greedy desire, particularly for wealth Synonyms: cupidity, rapacity, acquisitiveness

  9. 6. Culpable: (adj) deserving blame, worthy of condemnation*what root words are in “culpable” and “condemnation”? Synonyms: guilty, delinquent, peccant, blameworthy Antonyms: blameless, innocent, laudable, meritorious *what does the suffix “less” mean?

  10. 7. Dilatory: (adj) tending to delay or procrastinate, not prompt, intended to delay or postpone*any examples?  Synonyms: stalling, slow, tardy, laggard *look at roots! Antonyms: prompt, punctual, speedy, expeditious

Egregious: (e gre jus) (adj) conspicuous, standing out from the mass (used particularly in an unfavorable sense) Synonyms: glaring, flagrant, blatant *when have you heard these words used? *what is the connotation? (can you think of one that would be the opposite?) Antonyms: unnoticeable, paltry, piddling

  12. 9. Equivocate: (v) to speak or act in a way that allows for more interpretation; to be deliberately vague or ambiguous Synonyms: to talk out of both sides of one’s mouth, palter, hedge Antonyms: to speak one’s mind plainly

  13. 10. Evanescent: (adj) vanishing, soon passing away, light and airy Synonyms: ephemeral, transient, transitory Antonyms: everlasting, immortal, imperishable *what do the prefixes “trans” and “im” mean?

  14. 11. Irresolute: (adj) unable to make up one’s mind, hesitating Synonyms: indecisive, vacillating, wavering Antonyms: determined, decisive, unwavering *what does the affix “un” mean?

  15. 12. Nebulous: (adj) cloudlike, resembling a cloud; cloudy in color, not transparent; vague, confused, indistinct Synonyms: hazy, fuzzy, cloudy, vague, murky, opaque, indeterminate Antonyms: definite, distinct, clear, sharply focused

  16. 13. Novice: (n) one who is just a beginner at some activity requiring skill and experience (also used adjectivally) Synonyms: neophyte, tyro, trainee, apprentice Antonyms: veteran, past master, pro, expert

  17. 14. Penury: (n) extreme poverty; barrenness, insufficiency Synonyms: destitution, want, indigence Antonyms: affluence, abundance, luxury, opulence

  18. 15. Pretentious: (adj) done for show, striving to make a big impression; claiming merit or position unjustifiably; making demands on one’s skill or abilities, ambitious Synonyms: inflated, ostentatious, affected Antonyms: unassuming, unaffected, modest

  19. 16. Recapitulate: (v) to review a series of facts; to sum up Synonyms: review, summarize, sum up, go over

  20. 17. Resuscitate: (v) to revive, bring back to consciousness or existence Synonyms: revitalize, reanimate, restore, reactivate *what does the affix “re” mean?

  21. 18. Slovenly: (adj) untidy, dirty, careless Synonyms: unkempt, slatternly, slipshod, lax Antonyms: neat, tidy, careful, meticulous

  22. 19. Supposition: (n) something that is assumed or taken for granted without conclusive evidence Synonyms: assumption, presumption, hypothesis

  23. 20. Torpid: (adj) inactive, sluggish, dull Synonyms: sluggish, lethargic, otiose, languid Antonyms: energetic, dynamic, vigorous
