  2. Buffer State • Buffer state—a small country between two larger, more powerful countries. • Usually neutral • Ex. Uruguay between Argentina and Brazil

  3. Cacao • Cacao—type of tree from which we get cocoa beans. • Very important cash crop for Central America

  4. Cash Crop • Cash crops are crops grown for sale in market. • Opposite of subsistence farming

  5. Commonwealth • A commonwealth is a self-governing territory associated with another country. • Ex. Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens, but they do not have voting rights.

  6. Conquistadores • Conquistadores were Spanish conquerors of foreign lands during the colonial era. • 1519 (Colonial Period) decimated the Aztec Empire and established New Spain (colony).

  7. Coup • A coup is a change of government caused by a group taking control by force.

  8. Creole • Creole is a language blending African, European, or indigenous Caribbean languages. • Spoken in Haiti

  9. Ecotourism • Ecotourism is a type of tourism focusing on guided travel through natural areas. • Costa Rica • Make money and protect environment • Accounts for 2/3 of vacationers • Very important to economy

  10. Favela • Favelas are large slums surrounding Brazilian cities. • Crime ridden • lack of sanitation and schools

  14. Manioc • Manioc is a tropical plant with starchy roots. • Carbohydrate • Replaces potatoes in many dishes

  15. Maquiladoras • Maquiladores are special factories in Mexico owned mainly by American companies. • Employ many Mexicans • Produce products to export to the US

  16. Mestizos • Mestizos are people of mixed European and American Indian ancestry. • Why are most Mexicans mestizos?

  17. Minifundia • Minifundia—Small South American farms created when large colonial estates, from the Colonial Period, were broken up. • Usually had poor land and were too small to be profitable. • Inequality of land ownership, in South America, is the basis of much poverty and unrest.

  18. Mulattoes • Mulattos are people with both African and European ancestry. • Majority of Central Americans • Most are descendants of laborers brought to the region to work on the plantations.

  19. Santeria • Santeria originated in Cuba and is a religion that blends African traditions with Christian beliefs.

  20. Terrorism • Terrorism is the use of fear and violence as a political force. Ex. Colombia

  21. Voodoo • Haitian version of traditional African religious beliefs that are blended with elements of Christianity.
