Voyager (the Library catalogue) • Lists all books, journals, theses, videos held in the University of Auckland Library • Allows you to search by author, title, subject heading, call number, keyword • Links through to full-text electronic journals (where available) • But….does not index the articles within journals • You may book tutorials on Voyager (useful if you are new to the University)

  4. Searching for articles • If you are given the details of a specific article, then you can use Voyager to check where the journal is held. • However, if you are writing an essay, thesis, dissertation on a topic and you need to find your own references then you should first use a database(s) to find relevant journal references.

  5. Databases • Databases contain references to journal articles and/or the full-text articles • Each database indexes a different sub-set of journals From Learn select Databases and then a subject area (e.g. Business & Economics or Psychology)

  6. PsycINFO – the major psychology database

  7. Using PsycINFO • Search for articles and books on specific topics – combine topics using the boolean operator “and” • Search for articles in specific journals • Search for articles by specific authors • Use subject headings or keywords • Limit to e.g. date, full-text, literature reviews

  8. Search for a single topic (Aviation) in a specific journal • Type Aviation in search box • Click on Journal icon • Type Journal of organizational behavior in search box • Combine searches – Type 1 and 2 in search box

  9. Search Results Note the reference details (Volume number, Year, page numbers) Click on Library Holdings link

  14. Combining Topic searches This search is for articles about human factors engineering (Ergonomics) and aviation

  15. Search for your own topic • Try searching for a topic of your own choice in PsycINFO • If you find too many references, try limiting your search – e.g. by date • If you find too few references repeat your search in other databases e.g Current Contents • Try author searches – if you know people who have written on your topic

  16. If the Library doesn’t hold the journal I need…? • The Library can obtain journal articles from another Library for you via the Interlibrary Loans service • Complete an electronic form via the Document Delivery link on LEARN (or fill in a paper form in the Library) • Most articles will not cost you any money, but there may be charges for overseas items
