  1. LGBTQ+ Results Presentation Kristy Lee

  2. 37 student participated in this survey • The survey was posted in three places: my personal Facebook page, the PSU Pride Facebook page and the Class of 2015 Facebook page. • This survey was created for my final project in Journalism and focuses on aspects of the LGBTQ+ community. What is the survey exactly?

  3. The grade levels of those who participated

  4. Locations of living spaces of the participants

  5. “I have no idea” • “Someone who supports the LGBT community” • “A person who respects, understands, and supports anyone in the LGBTQA community. They also help educate the community.” • “A friend/person who values and believes in advocating for equal rights for the LGBTQ+ community.” • “a friend of someone” • “An individual who is publicly supportive of a particular community without actually belonging to that community.” • “A cisgender, heterosexual person who works to end oppression by supporting and advocating with the oppressed population.” • “coming together” • “A person or group who is rooting for you and is on your side.” • “A person identifying as straight who supports those identifying as queer.” • “a partner in crime” • “Someone someone can rely on or go to when in need or just because.” How participants defined the term “Ally”

  6. “A girl who likes another girl” • “A female who likes other females” • “A person identifying as female who is sexually attracted to females as well.” • “An individual that identifies as female, who is sexually attracted to females.” • “Two girls being in a romantic relationship” • “I personally do not like the term lesbian I find that it takes the feminine quality away from gay women” • “A female who is attracted solely to females. Or if you want to get technical, a male by sex, who's gender is female and likes women. Either way!” • “I think everyone has their own definition of sexuality.” • “A human being. A "girl" who likes or is dating/married to another "girl" but....the stability of what gender is also very up in the air” • “A girl who desires other girls romantically and sexually” • “A woman who is in a physical/emotional relationship with another woman.” How participants defined the term “Lesbian”

  7. How participants defined the term “Gay” “A boy who likes a boy” “A person who likes the same sex” “A person identifying as male who is sexually attracted to males as well. “A male who is sexually attracted to other males. Colloquially, refers to both gay me and lesbians.” “A person who is sexually attracted to someone of the same gender.” “The word gay is generally used as an umbrella term for any person who does not identify as heterosexual. It is often associated with the term homosexual, especially male-identifying homosexuals.” “A male who prefers to have relations with the same sex” “A homosexual” “I think everyone has their own definition of sexuality.” “Happy” “Not heterosexual” “A human being who likes another human being by societies standards of what a "same sex" is.”

  8. “Gender is based on your sex organs and sexuality is preference in a significant other” • “Gender is how you identify yourself, male or female, sexuality is which gender is your sexual preference” • Gender is how you wish to express yourself while sexuality is what you are attracted to sexually.” • “Gender is how someone identifies themselves along the spectrum of gender, and sexuality is a way of defining what kinds of people (either by gender or anatomical sex, depending on each person) someone is sexually attracted to.” • “Gender is the way you are born (male or female). Sexuality is what your choice is.” • “Gender is whether a person identifies as male or female, while sexuality is more so the recognition of genitals.” • “Gender is in your head. Sexuality is in your pants.” • “Gender is what defines you as male or female. Sexuality defines who you're interested in dating.” Participants descriptions of gender vs sexuality

  9. “Students Advocating for Gender Equality” • “Blank Blank Gender Equality” • Sexuality. Anti-Violence. Gender. Equality. (No, I didn't look it up)” • “I know sexuality and gender is in there, but that's about it” • “Students Acting for Gay Equality” • “Sexuality anti violence gender equality (looked it up to be honest)” • “Sexuality Anti-Violence Gender Equality” (19 out of 37) • “Sex age gender equality” What participants thought that S.A.G.E. stood for

  10. Types of harassment seen on campus

  11. What participants felt would help to make PSU more LGBTQ+ educated and inclusive “spread the Q around campus. don't make it the basement of pemi...” “More event promotion for LBGT pro events on campus” “More panel discussions and campus wide education” “Brand the term ally into what everyone should be, focus more on allys or at least include them more. Most LGBTQ+ events under shadow allys.” “Have workshop for incoming freshman – orientation” “More awareness of the issues and how LBGTQ+ are human.” “Gender inclusive bathrooms, gender inclusive school programming, training/informing all professors and staff who may not know about the LGBTIQ community about it so that classrooms are no longer potentially non-inclusive spaces.” “We need more gender neutral facilities and housing, which is being worked on currently. We also just need more educated people advocating across campus: the more educated people are, the more inclusive they are. Which, is one of the reasons that the SAGE panels are so effective.” “I'd like to see PSU Pride put on some relaxed events. Maybe a movie night kind of thing, or more social events. Maybe more people might go, getting to know the LGBTQ community better?” “I think their needs to be a LGBTQ section in every resident hall around campus” “Spreading awareness. Having lecturers on campus talk at PSU orientations, and welcome week. Create more open minded individuals on campus by doing so, as well as hosting events such as parades (The drag show usually does great).”

  12. Sex trivia • Stop the Violence Fair • Panels • Vagina Monologues • Draw Show • Movies with Meaning • Attended the TIC conference • Coming Out Day • Many or all Events that participants have attended via PSU Pride or S.A.G.E.
