  1. The Story of Judaism

  2. Polytheistic Religions – Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Shintoism, Confucianism ….. • Monotheistic Religions – Christianity, Judaism, Islam… • Judaism is the first monotheistic religion!

  3. Where did the idea of monotheism come from? • We get the majority of our information about the origins of Judaism (first monotheistic religion) from the TORAH, the most sacred writings of the Jews. • God chose Abraham to be the “Father” of the Hebrew people. • Abraham lived in Ur, Mesopotamia

  4. At God’s request… • God promised Abraham that if he left the land of his father and followed him, he would protect Abraham and his decedents. This is known as a covenant, or promise, between God and Abraham. • Abraham left Mesopotamia and traveled to Canaan. He then roamed to Egypt and back to Canaan.

  5. Abraham's journey…

  6. What would YOU do? • What would you have done if you were Abraham? Imagine your whole life you grew up believing in many different gods but then you were told to leave your life and worship only one god. WOULD YOU DO IT?

  7. Hebrews believed in only ONE God. • Yahweh was the ONE AND ONLY God in their eyes. • Yahweh protected Abraham and his people because of the covenant.

  8. Migration to Egypt • The Hebrews left Canaan and migrated to Egypt due to the threat of drought and famine. At first they were well received, however eventually they were put into slavery. • The Pharaoh of Egypt felt very threatened by the overwhelming number of Hebrews in Egypt.

  9. The Exodus! • God commanded the Hebrews be released from slavery but the Pharaoh did not comply. • A Hebrew man named Moses was told by God to lead the Hebrew people out of slavery in Egypt. • God sent down the 10 plagues to destroy Egypt. However the plagues passed over the homes of the Hebrews. • Moses lead the people out of Egypt and into the Sinai Desert.

  12. 10 Commandments • During their travels from Egypt, Moses climbed Mount Sinai and spoke with God. • He emerged days later with two stone tablets – commandments from Yahweh. • These commandments were the first religious laws of Judaism. • This formed a new covenant between the Hebrew people and God – God would protect them as long as they obeyed his laws.

  13. The Hebrew people roamed the Sinai Desert for 40 years as the legend goes. • Eventually they returned to Canaan and disregarded their nomadic lifestyle for a settled one.

  14. Closure - • You are a Hebrew living in Canaan (after the exodus) – write a letter to someone back home in Mesopotamia explaining what your religion is like and how it effects your daily life.
