  4. Dead Zone Information • There is no life in the dead zone • Polluted part of the Gulf of Mexico • Caused by nitrogen fertilizer, animal manure, car pollution, power plants and waste from the Mississippi River • Condition called hypoxia • We can help stop it by not polluting as much

  5. New Zealand North Island

  6. New Zealand Information • The 2 main cities are Hastings and Napier • Volcanic activity occurs in the central part • Occasional mild earthquakes • North Island is part of the Pacific Islands

Mono Lake Information • Alkaline lake in the high desert of the Eastern Sierra is home for many life forms • One of the oldest lakes in the world • Naturally saline waters mix with fresh water springs creating calcium carbonate (limestone) • Algae are the food source for trillions of brine shrimp and alkali flies that thrive in the salty water • Home to microbe GFAJ-1 which thrives on arsenic • Arsenic is poisonous to most life

Orbital MechanicsEarly Space Exploration • First astronomer • Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) • Thought the sun was center of universe • Proved Earth rotates on axis once a day • Thought Earth rotates in a perfect circle –which is wrong • Second astronomer • JohannsKepler (1571-1630) • Discovered Mars does not rotate in a perfect circle • Found out the planets do not go in a uniform circle, but in elipitical orbits • Learned the sun in not focus of the universe
