  3. How can I bring books to life? • Creativity • Themes • Senses • Activities • Brainstorming • Parents input • Students input if possible • Magazines • Websites • Concrete materials • The list is endless • What else can you think of?

  4. What materials do I need? • You would be amazed at the materials that are around you such as ribbon, fabric, pipe cleaners and other items and at places such at the Dollar Stores, Good Will, Thrift shops, Flea-Markets, your own house, right outside on the playground, at the park etc…

  5. What about equipment? • Computers • Switches/assistive technology devices • Light boxes/lights • Stereo • Headphones

  6. The Five Senses • Use taste, smell, touch, hear and vision to gather as much information for your students as possible. Bring a book to life for them through all of these wonderful experiences!!

  7. What about the Expanded Core Curriculum? • You can also work the ECC as well by incorporating vision, traveling ( field trips), O&M, calendar systems, assistive technology, social as well as recreation and leisure skills

  8. StateCurriculum • You need to provide students with materials that will cover the areas of the State Curriculum (SC). Examples of each are: • Reading-Braille story/tactile/props computer • Science-Sensory exploration • Social Studies-Jobs/Hello/Goodbye in various languages • Math- Matching shapes, counting books with props to go with it, Braillemanipulatives

  9. Resources • You can order various products from catalogs such as APH, NFB, AFB, Texas School for the Blind as well as Mailbox, Lakeshore and other companies. Utilizing your related services here at school such as Assistive Technology, recreation therapist, and others mentioned earlier. You can also utilize those outside services such as Itinerant teachers, other Vision teachers, vision agencies, low vision clinics etc… You need to try to find what you need for your students in order to benefit them in the best way possible.

  10. Making a DifferenceThe Ultimate Goal • When it comes right down to it you are making a difference. You may not see it right now, but you are leaving an impression on that child/children’s soul that will last a lifetime. • You can make a difference and change the world, one child at a time it is all in your hands! Just think it all starts with just 4 little words. Once Upon a Time… You finish the rest!
