  3. Our Policy: • We believe that it is of paramount importance that students are stretched and challenged at SWCHS. • This will:: • Inspire and motivate them • Enable them to fulfil their potential • Maintain their engagement

  4. Why does it matter? • Special Educational Need • Differentiated and personalised curriculum • Higher standards or expectations are for the benefit of all: “a rising tide lifts all ships”

  5. How do we identify which students to stretch and challenge? • We aim to stretch and challenge each child according to his/her ability • We have a staff register of students who have demonstrated an aptitude for a particular subject • Teacher identification is supplemented and supported by careful use of data and test scores • Liaison with feeder primary schools in Year 6

  6. How do we stretch and challenge our students? • Principal provision: differentiation and stretch and challenge within lessons • An extra-curricular enhancement programme – this may include: • Lectures • Challenge activities • Trips/visits • Workshops • Competitions

  10. So... • Our most able learners may not always be: routinely high achievers good at tests respectful of authority engaged in lessons, particularly in routine work handing homework in on time underlining titles and dates!

  11. Providing more challenge, not more work! • Higher order thinking skills Analyse, Evaluate, Create... • Allow pupils to jump steps • Open ended tasks which allow unusual responses • Encourage experimentation • Extended research projects, but with audience

  12. How can parents help? • Broadsheet newspaper • Day trips – museums, theatres, sports events • Listening to the radio (news and documentaries • Extra-curricular clubs, trips and visits • Encourage reading • Discussions • Providing opportunities, not forcing • Helping control activities
