Amphitheaters • Called a theatron • Large, open-air, built on hillsides • Consisted of 3 main elements: Orchestra, skene and audience • Skene: large rectangular building situated behind orchestra; painted and used as backdrop, used as “backstage” area for performers
Greek Theater • Began with festivals honoring the Gods • “City Dioysia” festival -plays and songs • Actor performance limitations • Chorus parts • 3 forms of theater • Comedy • Tragedy • Satyr
Costumes and Masks • Far away from the audience • Made of linen or cork • Very over exaggerated • Shape amplified actors voices • Tragic masks: mournful/pained expressions • Comedic masks: smiling or leering
