Create a circle map. • Write “American Dream” in the center. • Today, the American Dream is commonly referred to as the idea that anything is attainable for American citizens through hard work and determination. • Is the American Dream realistic or simply a fantasy? Write a paragraph that provides your opinion and describes your definition of the American Dream. (7 min.)

  5. (2) MOROSELY MOROSELY (adv.) in a gloomy manner The student looked at the failing grade morosely.

  6. (3) DEJECTEDLY The puppy sank down in the corner dejectedly after being scolded by his owner. DEJECTEDLY (adv): showing low spirits; in a depressed manner

  7. (4) BINDLE BINDLE (n) a bedroll, usually carried by a hobo When he found a place to set up camp for the night, he threw down his bindle and unrolled it onto the ground.

  9. (6) ANGUISH ANGUISH (n.) agonizing physical or mental pain; torment The pile of homework I had to complete was causing me stress and anguish.

  10. (7) PERISCOPE PERISCOPE (n.) a device that allows you to see an otherwise hard to see area (ex. Around a corner) The submarine raised its periscope to see above the water.

  11. (8) LUMBERED LUMBERED (v.) walked slowly and clumsily The brown bear lumbered over and scared the campers away.

  12. (9) BRUSQUELY I yelled brusquely into the phone at the telemarketer who had called three times already that night. BRUSQUELY (adv) abruptly blunt, short, or rude in speech

  13. (10) PANTOMIME PANTOMIME (v.) to convey emotions or actions without using speech; mimic The boy pantomimed his father scolding the dog.

  14. (11) IMPERIOUSLY IMPERIOUSLY (adv): in a manner which portrays superiority over others The seniors imperiously cut to the front of the lunch line.

  15. (12) SCOFFED SCOFFED (v.) mocked (made fun of) or showed scorn The other students scoffed at my idea I had for the project, even though they didn’t have any better ideas.

  16. (13) CRAFTY CRAFTY (adj.) being devious or deceptive The crafty magician hid the rabbit under the table before pulling it out of his top hat.

  17. (14) DRONED DRONED (v.) – made a continuous low humming sound The speaker droned on in a monotonous voice.

  18. (15) YAMMERED My grandmother yammered on and on about “those darn teenagers and their baggy pants and backwards baseball caps”. YAMMER (v.) to whine, complain, or talk repetitively and loudly
