    3. What Is Industrial Engineering? Industrial Engineering is concerned with the design of production systems. The Industrial Engineer analyzes and specifies integrated components of people, machines, and facilities to create efficient and effective systems that produce goods and services beneficial to mankind.

    4. Department History The department was founded in 1930, with the first BSIE degrees awarded in 1933 to Henry K. Saunders and Harold E. Thompson. Col. Frank Groseclose was the first head, from 1938-1942.

    5. Department History (cont.) A proposal to offer a doctoral program was accepted by the University in 1967, with the first Ph.D. awarded in 1969. The Furniture Manufacturing and Management Center was created in 1991, and the first B.S.I.E., FM degree was awarded to Paul Bottoms in 1993.

    6. General Information An ABET accredited program, granting bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D degrees each year. Undergraduate program ranked 13th and graduate program ranked 12th in the country by US News & World Report in 2004.

    7. Faculty & Staff Currently, there are 22 faculty on staff, with 9 adjunct professors, 4 technical support personnel, and 6 administrative staff members. 2 current IE professors are former NCSU IE department heads. 1 IE professor is a member of the National Academy of Engineers. Several are members of the Academy of Outstanding Teachers and have been recognized as Alumni Distinguished Professors.

    8. Students in IE Currently, there are 219 undergraduate and 89 graduate students in IE. In 2004-2005, 17 IE undergraduates held prestigious Park, Caldwell, Gant, Fitts, and Duncan scholarships. Over 25% of graduates earn honors distinction.

    9. Degree Programs Two undergraduate degree programs: Bachelor of Science in IE (B.S.I.E.) Furniture Manufacturing within the Bachelor of Science in IE (B.S.I.E, F.M.) Accelerated Baccalaureate/Master’s Program in IE Complete the requirements for both the Baccalaureate and Master’s degrees in 5 years

    16. Research & Extension Annual research expenditure of $4.17 million (2003-2004). The department includes several diverse research entities.
