  2. What is secure Internet browsing and email? • filtered browsing • secure access to email • remote access to DET online resources and services • individual accounts for all DET staff and students in NSW schools • authenticated access to Internet • login with an individual username and password

  3. What is filtered browsing? Filtering blocks access to inappropriate web sites • DET manages global lists of blocked or allowed web sites • There are different filters for staff and for each scholastic year • Schools can customise local filters to meet the needs of students and staff • Filtering allows staff and students to safely use the Internet in support of their teaching and learning

  4. What email service is available? • A web-based email product • Allows electronic communication facilitated by a Global Address List (GAL) • Access to other email facilities, e.g. Hotmail, is blocked • Teaching staff have the option to unsubscribe from email • GAL (Global Address List) entry will disappear • Not part of any automatic distribution list • Accessed through the DET Portal – My Profile • all staff have a DET User ID – anidentity by which DET information systems identify staff and their roles • DET User ID is unique, typically firstname.lastname • can be found through DET Directory Service (DDS) • staff may already have used their DET User ID to access online leave (e-LAPS) • basis for email address DETUserID@education.nsw.gov.au

What is my password? • the same DET User ID and password will access a range of DET online services: • secure Internet browsing and email • DET Portal • eLAPS • jobs@DET • a password change in one will result in a change of password for all – password synchronisation • staff may already have used and changed their initial password to access eLAPS or other DET online services • other staff can have their initial password reset by Principal or nominated school staff • it is critical that staff passwords are always kept confidential • staff passwords will need to be changed at least every 60 days • passwords are changed through My Profile tab in the Portal

  6. What if I forget my password? • secret question and answer can be used to allow access to change password • School may have local strategy • Principal can reset password • nominated staff may have permission to reset staff passwords • Help Desk can reset staff passwords 1800 555 950 NB: all teaching staff are able to reset student passwords

  7. How will staff receive their accounts? • staff may already have activated their account to access eLAPS or other DET online services • Principal or nominated staff can distribute account information to staff by providing username and resetting initial password • staff should immediately login and change their initial password • On first login to the DET Portal all users will be required to change their password and set a secret question and answer.

  8. How is my account managed? • employment change, eg school transfer, managed by HR payroll • staff who leave DET have accounts deleted automatically • staff requiring name change submit documentation to Staffing Services - fax 96797054

Student Account Process Accounts created Parental Letters Distributed School downloads student accounts from eLearning Account Console ‘Declines’ returned In writing to schools Student account details distributed OASIS updated Students log into their Portal OASIS data exported Student change initial password

How will students receive their accounts? • nominated staff will access the e-learning Account Console • download student account information • teachers will distribute account information – username and initial password to students. • school distribution strategy will regulate the initial login for students

How will students activate accounts? • Students log into the DET Portal using their username and initial password • The first time they login students are required to change their password • The password standard may vary for scholastic years • Students are required to set a secret question and secret answer • students are transferred to their Portal and can browse and access their email

What is the DET Portal? https://portal.det.nsw.edu.au • ‘Gateway’ to DET online applications • access limited to users with a DET User ID and password • type your DET User ID and password • click Login • first time you access the portal you are required to change your password and set a secret question and answer

Web Services school??? • A link will appear on the DET portal to the Web Services suite of tools. • Principal will be contacted by Paul Clark’s team to be advised of transition date to new environment – 2-3 weeks notice. • It is essential that all staff and students log on in the Web Services portal and change password prior to transition date. • Logging on to WS portal activates link in DET portal • Contact Gayle Tregoning for additional support.

  14. Transition process to secure Internet browsing and email • Readiness check returned to Paul Clark. • Principal will be contacted by Kathy Danilatos, Regional Implementation Coordinator, to advise training dates. • Training occurs (Principal and delegated staff) • Implementation – accounts: username/password • 20 working days after training, transitioning occurs. • Volunteers to host training? - Please let Kathy know.
