  3. Andrew Johnson (1865-1869) • Lincoln’s Vice President who took over after assassination • Born in New York • Jobs: Tailor, Governor, House of Representatives, Senate • First president ever impeached

  4. Ulysses S. Grant (1869-1877) • General and hero during Civil War • Jobs: soldier, farmer, leather store clerk, real estate agent • Known alcoholic and heavy smoker • Administration full of scandal • Born in Ohio

  5. Rutherford B. Hayes (1877-1881) • Lost popular vote but won with Electoral College • Jobs: Soldier, Lawyer, Philanthropist, president of National Prison Association • Born and lived in Ohio • Honest and Tolerant

  6. James A. Garfield (Mar.-Sept. 1881) • Born very poor in a log cabin in Ohio • Jobs: canal worker, teacher, professor, preacher, soldier, president of Hiram College • House of Representatives and Senate • Shot and dies two months later

  7. Chester A. Arthur (1881-1885) • Garfield’s Vice President who takes over • Born in Vermont, lives in NYC • Jobs: Teacher, principal, lawyer, Customs officer • Put first elevator in the White House • Does not run for second term due to illness

  8. Stephen Grover Cleveland (1885-1889) (1893-1897) • Jobs: Clerk, teacher, lawyer, Sheriff, Governor • Influential: Vetoed more bills than all presidents before him combined • First wedding at the White House • From New Jersey

  9. Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893) • Loses popular vote to Grover Cleveland • Jobs: lawyer, soldier, State Supreme Court reporter, US Senate • Wife died of tuberculosis at White House • From Ohio

  10. William McKinley (1897-1901) • Jobs: Teacher, soldier, lawyer, Governor • Wife has epilepsy and other issues • Shot in Buffalo, NY at Pan-American Exposition and dies one week later • President during Imperialist Expansion
