Kickin ’ Out math problems

Join the game and kick out math problems! Designed for grades 2-3, this educational math game helps students practice important mathematical skills such as place value, estimating sums, mental math, and regrouping. Progress through levels and advance down the field to the end zone. Earn brain breaks and kick field goals to move to the next division. Improve your math abilities and have fun while playing!

  1. Kickin’ Out math problems An Educational Math Game for grades 2-3 Developed by: Courtney Schmidt

  2. Game Introduction Students will use the mathematical skills being taught in 3rd grade to progress through the game. Players will begin at the 50 yard line and advance down the field as they master the skill of each level. Level 1- Place Value: Students will determine the sum of place value blocks and will navigate through defenders as they select the correct number when rounding to the nearest 10 or 100. Level 2-Estimating Sums: Students will be given addition problems where they will be timed when selecting an estimated sum. The faster they answer, they more their player advances down the field. Level 3-Mental Math: Students will become the teacher for this level. They will be shown an example of student work when estimating sums and will have to identify the error, correct their work then provide an accurate answer. Level 4-Regrouping: Students will practice solving problems with regrouping. Once students have mastered each level and made it to the end zone, the game will restart giving them an opportunity to select a different character. As the new character is selected the game will identify the player and assign higher level questions to authenticate their learning.

  3. Storyline What’s the game plan? How do I know I’ve mastered the skill? • The player will be selected in the locker room. Once selected they will move into the stadium starting at the 50 yard line. As levels are mastered, the player will move to the 40 yard line, then to the 10 yard line, and finally to the football end zone. After each level, the player will earn a ‘brain break’ by navigating his/her player through a real life down between two teams. • At the conclusion of all 4 levels, students will be given an opportunity to kick a field goal moving them to the next division. In this division, they will be presented with the following grade level’s math problems within this skill.

  4. Education relevance By participating in this mathematical Learning Program, students will be able to demonstrate the following: • I can use mathematical properties to understand addition. • I can round numbers using place value and a number line. • I can use mental math to add and subtract. • I can estimate sums and differences. • I can explain how addition and subtraction are related and use the relationship to solve problems. • I can decompose numbers using place value. • I can regroup when adding 3-digit numbers. • I can reason about place value to subtract 3-digit numbers. • I can use precision by checking my work.
