Vladimir IllichUlyanov • (later known as Lenin) was born in Simbirsk, Russia, on 10th April, 1870 • Father was a school Teacher • His Brother, Alexander Ulyanov was hung for attempting to assassinate the Tsar Alexander III • His school teacher was Kerensky’s father. • As the brother of a state criminal, attempts were made to stop Lenin from entering university. Eventually he was allowed to study law at Kazan University.

Lenin was expelled from university for protesting on campus. • so he went to St. Petersburg and studied on his own • After passing his law exams in 1891, Lenin started practicing law in Samara. • he married Nadezhda Krupskaya in 1898. • His wife was a revolutionary and lead the Women’s Lib movement in Russia

  4. Leon Trotsky • Lev DavidovichBronshtein (he assumed the name Leon Trotsky in 1902) was born in Yanovka, Russia, on 7th November, 1879. • His parents were Jewish and owned a farm in the Ukraine. When Trotsky was eight years old his father sent him to Odessa to be educated. • In 1897 he became involved in organizing the underground South Russian Workers' Union. • He was sent to Siberia after being arrested for revolutionary activity. After four years in captivity, he escaped and eventually made his way to London.

  5. At first he hated Lenin for splitting the communist party • Later became Lenin’s second in command. • Also went to Zurich with Lenin

  6. Joseph Stalin • Joseph Stalin, was born in Gori, Georgia on 21st December, 1879. • He was his mother's fourth child to be born in less than four years. The first three died and as Joseph was prone to bad health, his mother feared on several occasions that he would also die. • Joseph's father was a bootmaker and his mother took in washing. So he grew up poor. • At the age of seven he contacted smallpox, his face remained scarred for the rest of his life

Studied to become a priest • Was expelled for reading forbidden books on socialism • In 1901 Stalin joined the Social Democratic Labour Party and whereas most of the leaders were living in exile, he stayed in Russia where he helped to organize industrial resistance to Tsarism. • Stalin was arrested and spent 18 months in prison and then was deported to Siberia.

Stalin returned to Russia and over the next eight years he was arrested four times but each time managed to escape. • In 1911 he moved to St, Petersburg and the following year became editor of Pravda. • Arrested again in 1913, Stalin was exiled for life to North Siberia • After the overthrow of Nicholas II, the new prime minister, Kerensky allowed all political prisoners to return to their homes.
