  2. Introduction • Summer camp. What a great thing to look forward to each year. It was a great place to meet new kids and do fun things like swimming, hiking, fishing, and campfire. What if you didn't have any legs or were blind? What would the camp experience be like for you? • In the book, The Acorn People, you are going to meet some campers who are a little different from the typical camper, but they form a secret society and show the world what they can do.

  3. Before we read: •  Rather than chapters, the book is divided by days. • Before we begin reading each “day” we will talk about 5 words you need to know for each. • You are expected to take notes on the vocabulary.

While we read: • You will keep a double entry journal that will be graded at the end. • You are expected to have at least 2 entries for every day that we read the book. • Feel free to record more than twice. • Be thinking about the THEME – a general statement that Ron Jones (the author) is making about life, nature, or man.

After Reading Quick Quiz • How was the first necklace made? • What is the response from the audience at the water ballet? • Why do the children seem old for their age? • Identify 3 similes in the story. Reminder: SIMILE = a comparison between two items using the words like or as. Ex: A smile is like music to the soul.

  18. After Reading Projects: • What Projects? • 1. Disability PowerPoint 2. New Camp for children with disabilities • You will work in groups of my choosing. • You will be presenting your projects to the class, so make sure you are thorough. • You will be given a handout for the new camp project.

  19. Disabilities Project • Before you create your camps, you will need some basic information about the disabilities. So, you will be working in a group of my choosing to create a QUICK PowerPoint presentation about one of these: • Polio • Blindness • Multiple Sclerosis • Muscular Dystrophy • Hydrocephalic • Spina Bifid • Down Syndrome
