  1. Natural Cycles The Nitrogen Cycle

  2. What is Nitrogen? The nitrogen cycle illustrates the path that nitrogen takes through the environment.

  3. What is Nitrogen? Nitrogen is the most abundant gas in the air. (78% of the atmosphere)

  4. What is Nitrogen?

  5. What is Nitrogen? It is an important gas for all organisms.

  6. What is Nitrogen? Nitrogen is present in DNA.

  7. What is Nitrogen? Plants and animals use nitrogen to make proteins.

  8. What is Nitrogen? It is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and nontoxic.

  9. Steps in the Nitrogen Cycle ❶ The nitrogen is "fixed" into a usable form for plants (nitrates and ammonia).

  10. Steps in the Nitrogen Cycle ❷ Nitrates and ammonia are absorbed by plants through the soil.

  11. Steps in the Nitrogen Cycle ❸ Plants use these to make proteins.

  12. Steps in the Nitrogen Cycle ❹ Then plants are consumed by animals.

  13. Steps in the Nitrogen Cycle ❺ Animals return nitrogen to the soil through waste and decay. This process is aided by decomposers (bacteria and fungi).

  14. Steps in the Nitrogen Cycle ❻ Nitrogen also enters the soil through precipitation. Some nitrogen in the atmosphere is "fixed", or made usable, by lightning.

  15. Steps in the Nitrogen Cycle ❼ Most fixed nitrogen remains fixed. A small amount is changed back into nitrogen gas By denitrifying bacteria.

  16. Steps in the Nitrogen Cycle It’s important to remember that these steps aren’t really steps in a sequence of events. All of the processes are happening all of the time on the planet. There can be a benefit to talking about the processes as steps to get a grasp on all the mechanisms involved with nitrogen.

  19. NaturalCycles Unit This presentation was developed in conjunction with a three-part unit on Earth’s natural cycles, which is available in my store. The unit includes a study guide, teacher notes, leveled assignments, a vocabulary quiz, study helps, online resources, assessment, links to an editable copy of the file and slideshows, and answer keys. I hope teachers and students find it as useful and engaging as my classroom has. – Brent Holman
