What to do and how to act in a situation where a threat of violence exist? • Emphasis on: • Social skills: capacity to listen to the aggressive client • Structural viewpoints: safe surroundings, how to encounter clients • Challenge for education: • Appropriate ways of acting in acute violent situations can be learned and it should be basic knowledge • Bringing concrete examples into education Mervi Heikkinen

Different models for the deconstruction of violent organisation culture: • The elements for a non-violent organization culture • Transparency, respect, human rights, ethical values, safety, support, continuency, trust, knowledge, dialogue, emotions, co-operation, different perpectives • Challenge for education: • The different contexts and visions • Bringing knowledge and discussion about non-violent culture into education will increase the awareness on violence and the consequences of violence Mervi Heikkinen

Special challenges for violence prevention today • Focus on primary prevention • Sustainability • Keeping violence prevention on the political agenda on both local and national level • Getting prevention into education and keeping it there • Challenging the culture of acceptability of violence • Addressing the specific issues regarding young women and those with additional vulnerabilities • The challenge for education: • Empowering teachers • Providing adequate resources • Rethinking school policies and bringing violence in all its forms and with all the ”isms” into education Mervi Heikkinen

The possibilities in international and multisectoral networks and cooperation in violece prevention - There are several networks (WHO, WAVE, CAHRV, DAPHNE, EWL), national bodies, groups etc. already • There is no need to invent the wheel time after time • The role of education is to provide information - The link between research and education should be strengthened Mervi Heikkinen

The perspective of multiculturalism and immigration in violence prevention and human trafficking • The challenge for education • Challenging power and discrimination that are protected by cultural practices • Shame, honour, humiliation as gendered practices • Making the deep rooted practices and models visible • The possibilities are found in integration and social inclusion - The importance of primary prevention, the change of whole school culture - Making the different ”isms” of violence (racism, sexism) and for example homofobia visible Mervi Heikkinen
