  1. WAYS TO MAKE THE MOST YEAR OF YOUR SOPHOMORE

  2. Join a Student Org! You may have already joined an organization or two during your freshman year, but it is never too late to join new student orgs. Think about what really interests you and try to find organizations that might help you prepare for post-graduation. For organizations you are already part of, consider running or volunteering for a leadership position. Check out the University Services and Student Organization Fair, Tuesday 8/28 from 6:30-8:30 (Rain Date: Wednesday 8/29) to help you in your search!

  3. Land an Internship or Job! DC is one of the best cities for internships and we are lucky to be at the center of it all! Now that you found your way around GW, get out into the city and look for internship opportunities or even jobs! The more work experience you can get while in college, the more marketable you will be once you graduate. Go visit the GW Career Center at their new home at Colonial Crossroads on the 5th Floor of the Marvin Center or search GWORK for current job and internship postings on and off campus!

  4. Help Out the Community! There are always tons of opportunities to get out into DC and make a difference, even for just a couple short hours. You never know, you may get hooked after a couple times! Take advantage of opportunities your student orgs plan and check in with the Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service (CCEPS) located at Colonial Crossroads on the 5th Floor of the Marvin Center.

  5. Get Involved in Your School! Every school has opportunities for students to get involved besides just taking classes. Check out your school’s undergraduate programs office or advising center to learn more about ways to take advantage of these opportunities!

  6. Thought About Study Abroad? Sophomore year is a great time to start thinking about studying abroad. It is a great way to add to your academic experience and to travel during your college years. Many students can study abroad as early as their Spring semester of their Sophomore year or Fall semester of their Junior year. The earlier you start planning, the easier it will be to plan for a semester or year abroad!Need Help? The Office of Study Abroad is the perfect place to start by talking to a professional and get ideas of where you might want to go! They are located at Colonial Crossroads on the 5th Floor of the Marvin Center.

  7. Improve Your Grades! It’s a new year with new classes. Get off to a strong start by reflecting on what strategies worked well and where you can make improvements to your studying habits. There are tons of resources at GW to make sure you succeed in your classes. Here are a few: -GW Tutors Initiative: 10 FREE Hours of tutoring by other students in some of GW’s most popular courses -GW Libraries: Eckles Library offers free group tutoring throughout the week and the libraries have almost everything you would need for all your studying and research needs -GW Writing Center: Get a second opinion from student editors -University Counseling Center: UCC offers many sessions on time management and academic success as well as individual sessions that all students can take advantage of free of charge -Your Professors: Obvious, but they want you to do the best possible, so visit them during their office hours!

  8. Need Other Ideas??? Visit your House Staff! They can help you brainstorm other ideas! Stop by JJ’s Room (201) during Hall Hours to chat!
