  1. Plans for EUMETSAT’s Third Generation Meteosat (MTG) Geostationary Satellite Program Rolf Stuhlmann, Antonio Rodriguez, Stepehen Tjemkes EUMETSAT, Programme Development Department and Jean-Loup Bézy, Donny Aminou, Paolo Bensi ESA, Earth Observation Future Programmes Department 3-rd GOES-R Users’ Conference, May 11, 2004 Broomfield, Colorado

  2. Time Planning: Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) • 2015: NOMINAL NEED DATE FOR MTG • 2009-2014 : DEVELOPMENT/ON-GROUND TEST OF MTG SYSTEM • 2007-2009: COORDINATED ESA & EUM PREPARATORY PROGRAMMES (PHASE B) • APPROVAL PROCESSES: MTG PROGRAMMES (ESA & EUMETSAT) • 2005-2007: MTG PHASE A STUDIES FOR SELECTED MISSION CONCEPTS • APPROVAL PROCESSES: MTG PREPARATORY PROGRAMMES (ESA & • EUMETSAT) • 2001-2005: “USER CONSULTATION PROCESS” & PRE-PHASE A STUDIES • 2004 - 2005 PHASE 2: PRE-PHASE A STUDIES, EVALUATION/PRE-SELECTION OF MISSION CONCEPTS • 2001 - 2004: PHASE 1: HIGH LEVEL USER NEEDS & PRIORITIES AGREED, PREPARATION OF PRE-PHASE A STUDIES

  5. MTG Missions • Based on the assessment of observing techniques, five candidate observation • missions identified for MTG • Three distinct imagery missions dedicated to operational meteorology, with emphasis on nowcasting and very short term forecasting: • The High Resolution Fast Imagery (HRFI) mission, enhancement of the MSG HRV-channel mission; • The Full Disk High Spectral resolution Imagery (FDHSI) mission, successor to the MSG SEVIRI mission; • The Lightning Imagery (LI) mission; • An Infrared Sounding (IRS) mission focussed on operational meteorology, with some potential relevance to atmospheric chemistry; • An UV/Visible sounding (UVS) mission dedicated to atmospheric chemistry

  6. MTG Non Observational Missions and Services • Non Observational Missions • Data Collection and Distribution mission for DCPs • External Meteorological Data, collection and distribution to MTG users • Level 2+ Product Extraction mission • Services to MTG users • Near real-time • Non real-time • On-line (for both) • Data dissemination: assumed to be implemented by independent commercial services based on mass market technology and standards

  7. High Resolution Fast Imagery(HRFI) Mission Successor of MSG HRV specified to meet the requirements for ‘information on rapid development phenomena’ Repeat cycle: 5 min Coverage: 18o*6o N/S or E/W variably placed ‘Rapid Scans’ over 6o*6o @ shorter repeat cycle DX: 0.5 km 0.5 km 1.0 km 1.0 km 1.0 km

  8. High Resolution Fast Imagery(HRFI) Mission Spatial resolution at SSP: 0.5 km - 1.0 km Under review

  9. Full Disk High Spectral Resolution Imagery (FDHSI) Mission Successor to remaining SEVIRI mission specified to meet the requirements for ‘quantitative information’ Repeat cycle: 10 min 18o*18o Full Disk Coverage 18o*6o Local Area Cov. @ shorter repeat cycle DX: 1 km 3 km

  10. FDHSI Mission MSG heritage New Channels Under review Options

  11. FDHSI Mission FD-OPT 1 Under review

  12. FDHSI Mission FD-OPT 2 # of channels as well as position and width under review

  13. IR Sounding (IRS) Mission

  14. IR Sounding (IRS) Mission Region I: DX=6km corresponding to IE³0.7@1DX(=6km); IE³0.97@2DX(=12km); IE³0.99@3DX(=18km) Region II III: DX=3km corresponding to IE³0.7@1DX(=3km); IE³0.97@2DX(=6km); IE³0.99@3DX(=9km)

  15. Synchronous Imaging Requirements VIS, TIR-1 GOAL DX=0.5km TIR-2 Threshold DX=1.0km Sounder Spatial Sampling Distance Grid @ 6 km Imager TIR-2 Spatial Resolution Grid @ 1 km IR Sounder Pixel: @ IE=0.70 @ IE=0.97 @ IE=0.99 Coverage Synchronous Imaging:

  16. Synchronous Imaging Requirements Imagery mission Sounder Inbuilt Imager Relaxed time co-registration requirement Good co-registration in time/ good correlation Easy to correlate Large collection of data very limited number of channels Larger number of channels Information on ’scene content in sounder pixel Need: General information on characterisation of scene

  17. UV-VIS Sounding (UVS) mission UVS no direct MSG heritage but from user point of view related to ERS, EPS GOME, ENVISAT SCIAMACHY designed to capture regional, diurnal and sporadic behaviour due to biological, photochemical, and even volcanic factors focus is on spatial scales of 10 km over Europe LAC: Local Area Coverage (placed variable) FDC: Full Disk Coverage Requested spatial resolution:DX=4km@SSP

  18. UV-VIS Sounding (UVS) mission Spectral Bands and Applications

  19. Lightning Imagery (LI) Mission • priority is given to detect the weakest events • over the complete 18 degree disk! • ask for extremely demanding thresholds • requires currently 4 identical heads • Accepted relaxation: • reduce observed area to 16 degree • (red dotted circle) • shift 16 degree disk North to capture • northern Member States • (shifted yellow dotted circle)
