  1. The System Unit • Definition: A case that contains electronic components of the computer • How it works: It is used to process data

  2. The Motherboard • Definition: The main circuit board of the system unit • How it works: Many electronic components connect to the motherboard and the motherboard reads them

  3. Processor • Definition: Interprets and carries out the basic instructions that operate a computer • How it works: Overall operates a computer

  4. The Control Unit • Definition: component of the processor that directs and coordinates most of the operations in the computer • How it works: it interprets each instruction issued by a program and then initiates the appropriate action to carry out the instruction.

  5. The Arithmetic Logic Unit • Definition: A component of the processor • How it works: Performs arithmetic, comparison, and other operations

  6. Machine Cycle • Definition: performs the four operations of a processor • How it works: It fetches, decodes, executes and stores information

  7. Comparison of Personal computer Processor • Definition: The leading processor chip manufactures for personal computers are Intel, AMD Transmeta, IBM, and Motorola

  8. Expansion Cards • An opening in a computer where a circuit board can be inserted to add new capabilities to the computer. • Accelerator • Controller • Game • I/O • Interface • Memory

  9. Expansion Slots • An opening for an adapter to the motherboard • PCI Express • AGP • PCI • ISA • MCA • VLB • CardBus/PC card/PCMCIA ExpressCard • CompactFlash • SBus • Zorro • NuBus

  10. PC Cards • Used to add memory, disk drives, sound, and fax to laptop

  11. Ports • Point of attachment of a cable to the system unit • Used to join a cable to a device
