  1. Part 09IMFA and Solubility

  2. 1. Solutions - homogeneous mixture - dissolved substance: solute - dissolving substance: solvent - e.g. sugar in water sugar is the solute water is the solvent Water can form H-bonds with substances that also have H with F,O,N. This enhances the dissovling. Water is the UNIVERSAL SOLVENT, aqueous If alcohol (nonpolar) is the solvent, it is called a tincture

  3. 2. Solubility - ability of one substance to dissolve in another - nonpolar solutes dissolve in nonpolar solvents - polar solutes dissolve in polar solvents - ionic solutes dissolve in polar solvents

  4. 2. Solubility - “Like Dissolves Like” Rule - solute and solvent must be chemically compatible - must have similar IMFA so the solute is attracted to the solvent and vice verse

  5. p. 78 1. Nonpolar Molecule London Forces Br Br Is Br2 soluble or insoluble in water? Insoluble, it is nonpolar and water is polar so there are no IMFAs between them.
