  2. What is Ecology? • Ecology(defined) The study of the interelationships between living things and their environment(climate,soil,moisture, etc) Some Examples:

  3. What is Ecology? • In 1866 German biologist and evolutionist Ernst Haeckel used the word to denote the study of organisms and their interaction within the world around them

  4. Ecology • The term Ecology comes from two Greek words • 1. Oikos: “means house” • 2. Logos: “which means study” • Ecology means the study of houses or environments

  5. Terms • Individual(defined) An individual or single organism. Example: A mouse, a fox. An oak tree.

  6. Terms • Population(defined) A group of like species. Example a family of mice, a stand of oak trees, a group of fox

  7. Terms • Community(defined) All of the populations of plants and animals in a certain area

  8. Terms • Niche(defined) The specific place or role an organism has in the community. Example: Worms break down organic material to improve the soil.

  9. Terms • Ecosystem(defined) All living communities on an area, together with non living parts of their environment. Example forests, lakes, ponds, backyards ,etc.

  10. Terms • Biome(defined) A major land ecosystem that has a distinct kind of plant life, such as grassland or desert.

  11. Terms • Biosphere(defined) The thin skin of soil, water and air where all life exists
