  1. AIS-IFT: An intelligent tutoring system for training initial entry helicopter pilots Demonstration (Alpha release) April, 2003

  2. Overview • This presentation will highlight the key features of the AIS-IFT system. • AIS-IFT is currently under development. • This presentation shows the Alpha release version of the software. • The final version will be available in April 2004.

  3. AIS-IFT: Overview • AIS-IFT is an intelligent tutoring system for initial-entry rotor wing training • It provides automated, customized instruction in a simulation-based training environment • The instruction is adapted to individual skill levels, learning style, and personality • Includes a visual authoring tool that allows for rapid creation of instructional behavior

  4. AIS-IFT: Demo Features • This demo highlights the following functionality: • Pre-flight briefing adapted to learning style • Adaptive exercise selection based on student skills and personality • Monitoring and feedback of student performance during a training flight simulation • Brief after-action review

  5. Adaptive Exercise Selection • AIS-IFT selects exercises based on the student’s skill level and personality (assessment of these factors happens when the student first signs in with the tutor and is not shown in the demo). • Here, it has selected a simplified task for an introverted student, reducing the number of variables to be monitored by the student during the flight. • This easier exercise acts as a stepping stone to more complex exercises.

  6. Pre-flight Briefing • AIS-IFT provides pre-flight briefing before an exercise. It: • states the goals of the exercise, and • provides an opportunity to review necessary skills, procedures and principles. • This briefing is adapted to different learning styles. The first screen shows the presentation tailored to a student who likes information to be presented in an organized manner. The second screen shows it tailored for someone who likes to explore.

  7. In-flight Monitoring and Feedback • AIS-IFT monitors a student’s flight performance and provides automatic, real-time feedback. • The screens show how the feedback evolves over time, going from initial alerts to descriptions of procedures when the student doesn’t respond to the initial feedback.

  8. In-Flight Feedback: Summary • AIS-IFT can currently detect and respond to the following conditions: • Loss of heading • Loss of altitude • Over-controlling • Loss of control of the aircraft • This set will be expanded in future releases.

  9. After Action Review • The alpha release of AIS-IFT includes rudimentary after-action review showing the trajectory of the aircraft during the flight. • This feature will be greatly expanded in future releases to include adaptive discussions of successes, failures, progress, and review.

  11. Authoring Instructional Behavior • Visual interface for rapid authoring of instructional behavior. • Enables flexible re-use of content for different instructional goals and philosophies.

  12. Authoring Instructional Behavior • The figure shows a one high-level instructional behavior. This visual language enables rapid specification and modification of such behaviors.
