  1. States of Matter

  2. Title a new page “States of Matter” • The notes you should write in your notebook are in red printing in this PowerPoint. • When you see words that are red on the following slides, write them in your science notebook.

  3. States of Matter There are three states of matter: liquid, solid, and gas.

  4. Definition Volume: The amount of space an object takes up. Practice figuring out volume by writing the answers to the questions in the next two slides.

  5. Measuring Liquid Volume What is the volume of water in each cylinder? Images created at http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/primaryframework/downloads/SWF/measuring_cylinder.swf A B C Pay attention to the scales for each cylinder.

  6. 9 cm 8 cm 10 cm We can measure the volume of irregular object using water displacement. Amount of H2O with object = ______About of H2O without object = ______Difference = Volume = ______ http://resources.edb.gov.hk/~s1sci/R_S1Science/sp/en/syllabus/unit14/new/testingmain1.htm Measuring Solid Volume We can measure the volume of regular object using the formula length x width x height. _____ X _____ X _____ = _____

  7. Definition Molecule: A group of two or more atoms that stick together.

  8. solids • Solids have a definite shape and volume. • Solids have molecules that are tightly packed together. • Solid molecules vibrate, or jiggle. • Solid water is ice.

  9. liquids Liquids have volume but can change shape, depending on the container they are in. Liquid molecules are farther apart than solid molecules. Liquid molecules move faster than solid molecules. Water is a liquid.

  10. gasses Gasses have volume, but no definite shape. Gasses fill up any container, regardless of how big the container is. Water in a gas form is called “water vapor.”

  11. Great work! Real World Science Video can be found in the “Matter” folder on our Flipped Classroom Lesson page.
