Signs and Symptoms • Someone with Panic disorder might complain about chest pains or other heart attack like symptoms • Some Symptoms include • Chest pains • Dizziness or fainting • Fear of dying, losing control, or impending doom • Feeling of choking • Numbness in the hands, feet, or face • Nausea or upset stomach • Trembling or shaking
Symptoms con. • Fast beating heart • Hot or cold flashes • Feelings of detachment • Shortness of breath
Treatment • Cognitive-behavioral therapy helps the patient recognize their disorder and control their feelings • Antidepressants are prescribed to people with Panic disorders • Daily activities also help slow panic attacks • Eating well • Exercising • Getting enough sleep
Causes • May be related to genes • Panic disorder is linked to missing proteins in the brain • Chronic stress may cause anxiety to build • May also be brought on by drugs • Childhood depression may also cause anxiety • Caffeine in excess amounts can cause panic attacks
Facts and Myths • Twice as common in women as men • People with panic disorders also have symptoms of alcoholics or drug users • People with panic disorder also may have agoraphobia, fear of public speaking, or other phobias • Studies show that people who suffer from constant anxiety also may have an increased risk in heart attacks or heart disease • Studies show middle age women have a boost in panic attacks
