  2. Introduction • I was awarded three fellowships to attend and represent Palestine in three events related to the Internet & Technology as follows: • ICANN51 meeting, 12-16 October 2014, Los Angeles, California , USA.(sponsored by ICANN).

  3. Introduction • 2.IETF92 meeting, 22-27 March 2014, Dallas, Texas, USA •  Sponsored by the global Internet society.

  4. Introduction • 3. ICANN53 meeting, 21-25 June 2015, Buenos Aires, Argentina (sponsored by ICANN) •  Sponsored by ICANN organization.

ICANN Fellowship Program • What’s ICANN? • ICANN stands for The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names & Numbers. • It’s a nonprofit organization that’s responsible for Domain Name System (DNS) operations, global IP addresses allocation, generic top-level domains accreditation (such as .com, .net). • Moreover it develops Internet policies and ensures the Internet stability, security and interoperability. • it is headquartered in Los Angeles, California, USA.

ICANN structure • It has a multi-stakeholder governance model where all involved parties such as industry, individuals, non-commercial interests and governments participate in decision making and policy development, it’s managed by a board of directors composed of 16 voting members and 5 non-voting ones

ICANN meetings • ICANN organizes three meetings a year in different parts of the world, each meeting lasts for one week, hundreds of people participate from all over the world and hundreds of sessions are being held at the same time, every attendee would organize his own program to follow sessions in his field of interest (Technical, Law, copy rights, privacy..etc). •  2014 meetings: March-Singapore, June-London, October-Los Angeles  2015: Feb-Singapore, Jun-Buenos Aires, Oct-Dublin.  2016: Mar-Marrakech.

The Fellowship program • ICANN has a vision to bring people who have a good potential from developing countries so they attend, participate and contribute in the Internet community, that’s why the Fellowship program has been created. • Fellows should participate efficiently, submit a report after the event and start applying what they learned in their technical communities. • We had our special program to follow each day, some sessions were mandatory for all of us and some others were optional as you can choose sessions related to the area that you’re interested in. • The fellowship covers all expenses related to the participation (registration fees, tickets, accommodation, VISA fees and pocket money).

The Internet Society to IETF Fellowship program • The Internet Society (ISOC): is an international non-profit organization that aims to "to promote the open development, evolution and use of the Internet for the benefit of all people throughout the world“. • It’s headquartered in Virginia, USA and has offices in Geneva, Switzerland, and it has local branches in over 90 country around the world(including Palestine). • The Internet Society is the parent organization of IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) organization that’s responsible for the Internet protocols and standards. • IETF consists of different areas (Routing, Security, Transport, Internet) that compromise different Working Groups ( IDR, OSPF, MPLS). • ICANN, ISOC, IETF are interrelated!.

IETF meetings • IETF organizes three events around the world a year to discuss and develop different types of technical protocols, new proposals, RFCs and relevant topics related to the Internet. • Interaction between IETF WGs, vendors and academic people  developing protocols!. • 2014 meetings: Mar-London, Jul-Toronto, Nov-Hawaii 2015 meetings: Mar-Dallas, Jul-Prague, Nov-Yokohoma. 2016 meetings: Apr-Buenos Aires, July-Berlin.

ISOC to IETF Fellowship program • The Internet Society has a vision to support candidates from developing countries who are interested in developing the Internet and have good potential to be leaders in this field to attend IETF event. • Fellows should participate efficiently in the week and submit a report following their participation and spread the word at their countries. • All expenses are covered by the fellowship program!.

  16. IETF92: 14 Fellow from 13 country out of 1200 participants from all over the world, most fellows were PhD students or holders!.

  18. Conclusion • 1. These fellowships helped me to gain great knowledge and experience about the latest Internet technologies and protocols such as IPv6, DNSSEC and new TLD and many more.

  19. Conclusion • 2. I had the chance to network and interact with engineers, professionals and leaders from all over the world. • 3. I’ve got new friends from all over the world!. • 4. They were excellent chances to demonstrate and prove the Palestinian presence in such International events!.
