  1. Shitake mushrooms have various health benefits. It contains compounds that maintain heart health, boost the immune system and even helps to fight tumors and cancer. When it comes to taste, they are the yummiest variety. In addition, mushroom farming can bring big profits. When grown on logs, they produce fresh mushrooms for about 5 years or more. So you can grow your own shitake mushroom logs for sale and start your own business. Here’s how you do it by following some simple steps. Getting The Logs To cultivate mushrooms, you need a substrate or a growing medium where the mushrooms will first come into existence as mycelium. The substrate acts as a source of food for the mycelium. Shitakes grow best on a wood-based medium due to its nutrient contents. Deciduous hardwood like oak works best but maple, ironwood, and beech can also be used. You should choose fresh logs those which have not been lying for more than a few weeks because fungi of other species may start to grow on them first. However, you can get pre-inoculated Shiitake mushroom Log from a reliable supplier and exporter like Agrinoon as they produce the best quality substrates. The logs should ideally be 3-6 inches in diameter and 3-4 feet in length.

  2. Inoculating The Logs The next step is to inoculate the logs with live mycelium culture or mushroom spawn. You can procure spawns online to inoculate your Shiitake mushroom Log from Agrinoon, one of the best producers of fresh and dried mushrooms, logs and spawns. Mycelium can be introduced in the logs by drilling evenly spaced holes with a power drill around the logs and filling it up with either sawdust spawns or tapping spawn plug into the hole. Then you need to seal the holes with beeswax to save your logs from other fungi spore floating in the air as they may out- compete the shiitake spawns. However, it is best to use organic beeswax on your food because mushrooms absorb whatever comes in contact with them. Incubation It takes longer for Shiitakes to incubate compared to other varieties needing about 6 to 12 months. The logs need to be placed in a shady location with good airflow. It should not touch the ground and can be kept on bricks or wooden pallets preventing any competing fungi to get on to the logs. Next, the logs should be covered with a breathable fabric so that it is not exposed to direct sunlight and gets moisture.

  3. It should not be covered with a plastic tarp to prevent molds. If the climate is dry, the logs should be watered twice a week for 10 minutes or more every time. Now it’s time to wait and after a span of 6 to 12 months, mushrooms will start fruiting. Cultivating shiitakes is a bit more difficult because their mycelium is not very aggressive and takes longer to incubate. But it is rewarding at the same time as it produces more flushes given the right conditions. Agrinoon (Fujian) Ecological Agriculture Co.
