  1. Acid Precipitation (acid) Rain (acid) Rain go away! Come again some other day! By Jesse W

  2. Acid precipitation is when pollutants such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide from factories and car exhausts release into the air. • Acid precipitation can be in forms of: • Rain • Snow • Sleet • Hail • Dew • Fog Definition & Types

  3. Northwestern United States/ Southern Canada • Central Europe • India • China Where does it occur?

  4. Acid precipitation can cause: • Rust metal • Cause respiratory disease in humans • Peel paint • Wear out buildings/statues VERY quickly • Damages cars Pollution Cause

  5. Acid precipitation is harmful for forests because it can seeps into the roots and dissolves nutrients for plants and trees. It also runs off into streams, lakes, and other bodies of water. This lowers the pH level of the water which can effect small aquatic life. This could eventually harm the local food chain. Environmental Consequences

  6. How are people conserving the environment against acid precipitation? • Conserve home energy • Utilize public transportation • Walk to local places • Car pool Ways people are conserving our environment

  7. Yearly, about $60 million are car damages • For nearly the 20 states acicd precipitation occurs in the United States, it costs $5 billion in damage • For forests, it costs around $350 per acre • Annually, for forests it costs $2.5 trillion Cost’s of Acid Precipitation

  8. Title IV of the Clean Air Act – 1990 Applicable Legislation

  9. Clean rains pH level is 5.0 – 5.5, acid rains pH level is on average 4.3 • Caused by burning fossil fuels • Can be produced by erupting volcanoes • Acid rain smells and looks like normal rain • A bunch of Canada’s acid precipitation issue results from the United States • An estimate of about 95,000 lakes have been affected by acid precipitation Extra Facts
