  1. Jesus’ Temptation

  2. After his baptism, Jesus was led to the wilderness by the Holy Spirit. For forty days and forty nights Jesus had nothing to eat and drink.

  3. The devil appeared to tempt Jesus. “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread” he said. Jesus replied, “it is written, ‘One does not live on bread alone.’”

  4. The devil led Jesus to see all the Kingdoms of the world, and tempted a second time. “To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” Jesus replied, “It is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.’”

  5. The devil led Jesus to Jerusalem to the temples pinnacle, and tempted a third time. “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.’” Jesus gave his final reply, “It is said, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

  6. The devil left Jesus in peace. What is temptation? How did the devil tempt Jesus? How did Jesus avoid temptation? How can we avoid temptation?

  7. Temptation Scenario One. Whilst shopping, a hat catches your eye costing £5. You really want it, but you only have £5 in your pocket. And your mum has asked you to buy a loaf of bread on the way home costing £1.50... What is the temptation? How can we avoid this temptation?

  8. Temptation Scenario Two. It’s your sisters birthday party and there’s one slice of cake left. She’s asked the last slice to be saved for her but you haven’t had one yet... What is the temptation? How can we avoid this temptation?

  9. Can you think of any of your own ‘temptation’ stories? Think-Pair-Share and Discuss.
