Language Arts • Reading and Writing Workshop with conferences with teacher individually and/or small groups. • Mini Lesson/Independent Practice/Share time • Small strategy groups/individual conferences • Students will be encouraged to dig deep into ideas, concepts, meanings, and messages from what they read. They will become independent thinkers, formulating their own ideas with depth and complexity using texts as evidence.

  4. Writing • Focus on the integration of reading and writing connection. • Writing – narrative, expository, research, reading responses • Stressing CUPS: capitalization, usage, punctuation and spelling.

  7. Procedures and Expectations • Write in planner at the beginning of every class • Complete short Lexicon warm up • Have materials out and ready: • Planner, pencil bag, hw folder, book to read. • Student come prepared to learn.

  8. Behavior • Be Nice and Respectful!! • 8 Expectations • Practice Life Principles • I don’t mean to scare you…. • Questions or Concerns- ask Me!! • First person I talk to about behavior concerns is your child…they can fix it, great no problem…if not, I’ll be calling.

Agenda • Communication Tool between school and home • Students are expected to record assignments in each class • Parents are expected to sign agenda book nightly. • Please have your child show teachers any notes you write of us in agenda book • Only positive notes will be written in the agenda.

  10. Homework • Study for spelling or vocab words • Usually not on Wednesdays or the weekend • Read for at least 20 minutes a night • At least make an attempt • Ask to see their planner…do not ask “Do you have homework?”

  11. Home “Heart” • “H” Hug someone at home • “E” Eat together as a family • “A” Ask your parents how their was…before they ask you • “R” Read with a family member • “T” Talk to your parents about their childhood

  13. Grading • Homework does count as a daily grade • Daily grades 40% • Major grades 60% • 3 days notice before a major test • Parents can help 10% • Late work: 1 day -10 pts, 2 days -20 pts. 3 days Zero

  14. Volunteering • If you have a special skill you can share with us, let us know! • You are welcome to eat lunch with your child, please sit at the side tables. • Must complete form for background check in order to volunteer in the classroom. This is a new district policy put in place to protect our students.

  15. Why adults should read children’s books…. • It’s fun • It keeps your imagination active • It strengthens your relationship with the children in your life who read. • It sets an example for the children in your life, making them more likely to become readers

  16. Why adults should read childrens books….. • It’s fast. Children’s books are usually shorten than adult books, so if you don’t think you have time to read, you DO have time to read a children books. • It allows you to read across genres. • It’s like time travel- it’s an easy way to remember the child you once were, when you first read a book.

  17. And the last two reasons why adults should read children’s books • It’s often inspirational-reading about heroes and bravery and loyalty makes you want to be a better person. And couldn’t we all do with some of that? • Did I mention that it’s fun?
