How to Steer Clear of Cancer: Smoking Cigarette smoking is the major cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. • Lung cancer is the #1 cause of cancer death • 87% of lung cancers are related to cigarette smoking • Men who smoke are 23 times more likely to develop lung cancer and women who smoke are 13 times more likely • 157,200 people died of lung cancer in 2003 • Smoking is linked to lung cancer as well as esophageal cancer, bladder cancer, and head and neck cancer

  14. How to Steer Clear of Cancer: Smoking, Don’t Start! • Each day 4,000 teens try their first cigarette • Nicotine causes addiction • Most (60%) will become regular smokers • Half will die of smoking-related disease • Smoking SUCKS!!!

  15. How to Steer Clear of Cancer:Diet • Eating vegetables and fruits has been shown to lower the risk of several cancers • Vegetables and fruits contain anitoxidants, minerals, vitamins, fiber • Eat at least 5 servings a day • Limit saturated fats

  16. How to Steer Clear of Cancer: Exercise • One third of cancer deaths in the U.S. are due to unhealthy diet and insufficient exercise • Obesity is linked to breast, colon, endometrial, esophageal, and kidney cancers • 60 minutes of exercise 5 days a week
