  3. Two Brothers • Jacob and Esau • Twin Brothers (Esau oldest) • Very different • Sons of Isaac and Rebekah • Each parent had a favorite • Isaac: Esau Rebekah: Jacob

  4. Selling of the Birthright • Oldest son had birthright (100% of inheritance) • Esau sold birthright to Jacob for a bowl of soup • God had told Isaac to give it to the younger son • Isaac still tried to give it to Esau • Rebekah and Jacob tricked Isaac to get the birthright

  5. Jacob’s Ladder • Jacob had to run from Esau • Dreamed of a ladder to heaven • Meant Jacob was blessed by God

  6. Jacob Gets a Wife and Another Wife • Jacob went to live with his uncle Laban • Fell in love with his cousin Rachel (love at first sight) • Agreed to work 7 years for the Laban so he could marry her • Tricked into marrying her sister Leah • Worked 7 more years for Rachel

  7. Fight with an Angel • Jacob returned home • Dreamed he fought an angel (later revealed to be God) • Named changed to Israel • “One who fights with God and wins” • 12 sons become the 12 tribes of Israel
