The Subjunctive Mood • We all already use this in the modal verbs without realising it • Ichmöchte (would like)- this is a form of the subjunctive verb • The subjunctive is not a tense as it can be used throughout the tenses • The subjunctive is used as an alternative to the conditional tense and is mostly used with modals or in indirect speech and haben/sein
Subjunctive • Ichhabe Geld- this sentence indicates what? • The subjunctive does the opposite • It tells the reader what they would have done had they had the money • Hätteich das Geld, würdeichnachEuropafahren A Fact
How is the subjunctive formed? • Usually formed by putting the verb in to the imperfect tense and adding an umlaut (if possible) and adding an ‘e’ if there is already not one. • *** Exception is sollen and wollen- no umlaut is added
