When to use it? • The conditional tense is being used increasingly in the place of the subjunctive. • Siewürden das Hausnichtkaufen- they would not buy the house • The conditional is also used as a polite request WürdenSiebittewarten? NOTE: The conditional is never used for haben or sein!!
The Subjunctive Mood • We all already use this in the modal verbs without realising it • Ichmöchte (would like)- this is a form of the subjunctive verb • The subjunctive is not a tense as it can be used throughout the tenses • The subjunctive is used as an alternative to the conditional tense and is mostly used with modals or in indirect speech and haben/sein
Subjunctive • Ichhabe Geld- this sentence indicates what? • The subjunctive does the opposite • It tells the reader what they would have done had they had the money • Hätteich das Geld, würdeichnachEuropafahren A Fact
How is the subjunctive formed? • Usually formed by putting the verb in to the imperfect tense and adding an umlaut (if possible) and adding an ‘e’ if there is already not one. • *** Exception is sollen and wollen- no umlaut is added
Most commonly used with • They often include clauses with ‘wenn’ • haben/sein and modal verbs • Ichhätte das Besser machenkönnen • WennichZeitgehabthätte, wäreich ins Kino gegangen • Ichmöchte das machen • All other Verbs generally used the conditional instead • Wenn das Wetter schönwäre, würdenwirzum Strand gehen
