  2. Starter activity… Self evaluation activity. Now you have completed the first section of the course, answer the following questions in your book honestly… • How well do you think you are understanding the theory side of PE? • Which topics have you found the most interesting? • Which topics have you found the most challenging?

  4. Fitness! What is fitness? Discuss this with a partner… • So fitness just means that you are able to what you want or need to do without getting tired Fitness means being physically able to meet the demands on your environment.

  5. Health related or skill related? There are two basic kinds of fitness… Health-related fitness Skill-related fitness This means you’re healthy, and you can do everyday activities without getting tired. This is fitness to play sport at a high level. You need a high level of health-related fitness, as well as skill-related fitness.

  6. Health-related fitness… This includes… • Cardiovascular endurance • Muscular strength • Muscular endurance • Flexibility • Body composition You should know what each of these mean, and be able to relate them to a sporting example!

  7. Cardiovascular endurance What is this? The ability to exercise your whole body for a long time. • Your heart and lungs work together to keep your muscles supplied with oxygen • The harder your muscles work, the more oxygen they need • If you have a high level of CVE, you are able to supply oxygen to your muscles during a whole body exercise Can you think of a sporting example that would need CVE?? Cross-country running Can you think of an everyday example that would need CVE?? Running up the stairs!

  8. Muscular strength What is this? The amount of force that a muscle can apply. • This is important in sport where you need to push or pull things with a lot of force • If your muscles are strong, you’re less likely to injure yourself by picking something up that’s heavy Can you think of a sporting example that would need muscular strength?? Weightlifting Can you think of an everyday example that would need muscular strength?? Carry heavy shopping bags

  9. Muscular endurance What is this? The ability to repeatedly use your voluntary muscles over a long time, without getting tired. • Voluntary muscles – attached to the skeleton - under your control • Involuntary muscles - work without concious effort Can you think of a sporting example that would need muscular endurance?? Squash

  10. flexibility What is this? The amount of movement possible at a joint. Flexibility means • Fewer injuries – less likely to strain a muscle • Better performance – some sports require you to be flexible, e.g. gymnastics • Better posture – fewer aches and pains Can you think of a sporting example that would need flexibility?? Dance

  11. Body comp0sition What is this? The percentage of your body weight made up by fat, muscle and bone. • If you are healthy, your body will be between 15-25% body fat • Many physical activities will become harder to do and you will have higher risk of injury • This is often due to poor diet, and can lead to health problems
