  1. Preamble to the Constitution Acts and Laws that insure these goals are achieved

To form a more perfect union…… • The Declaration of Independence was signed July 4,1776 giving birth to the United States. • Nine states ratified the Constitution in 1790, which marked the beginning of the United States government. • State conventions ratified the Bill of Rights to the Constitution protecting the most fundamental freedoms dear to Americans.

  3. Establish Justice • President Abraham Lincoln enacted the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, freeing slaves in the Southern States. • In 1789, Congress passed the Judiciary Act that created the federal court system. • The Federal Bureau of Investigation was established to help solve and fight crime. • The Department of Justice was established.

  4. Insure Domestic Tranquility….. • Establishment of Federal Emergency Agency in 1978 to aid Americans during catastrophes. • Establishment of National Guard to maintain a military force that was ready at all times to protect Americans in times of war and national threat.

  5. Provide for the Common Defense….. • Establishment of Department of War which became the Department of Defense. • The National Security Council was established to advise the President on issues that threaten the United States. • National Air Force was established, as well as the Navy, Army, and Marines.

  6. Promote the General Welfare… Establishment of Rural Electrification Administration to provide electricity to small towns and farms. Establishment of Medicare to provide medical care for the elderly. The Social Security Act was passed to guarantee that Americans who worked would have a retirement income.

  7. And secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity….. • Establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency to clean up toxic waste dumps and to protect the environment. • National Park Service was established to preserve some of our beautiful land. • The Voting Rights Act assured that all citizens could vote. • Clean Water Act was passed to guarantee the safety of America’s water supply.
