LESSON LEARNED ON THE WATERFRONT • Accidental CHT discharge believed to be caused by cleaning chemicals being dumped by berthing cleaners into VCHT system through drains, toilets, or sinks. • Navy Divers working under the water about 20 feet from discharge. • IMPACT: Diving operations stopped immediately. There were 4 divers from that team became ill within 72 hours. Another diver who used the effected diving equipment the following day also became ill. A few of the ill diver’s family members became ill as well. • Take Away: • Ensure shipboard personnel are trained on importance of proper disposal of cleaning chemicals. • Contact NEPMU5 to get further guidance and assessment of situation immediately
